The Battle of Bosworth
Over 500 hundred years since Harri Tudur led an army to the market town of Bosworth to defeat Richard the Third in the conclusive battle of the Wars of the Roses, Dewi Pugh led a small band of warriors from Bala over the Berwyn mountains to put Market Bosworth Rugby Club to the sword.
After a cooked breakfast in the Plas Coch and several pints on the long journey to Bosworth, Dewi’s hand picked squad of veteran players arrived in time for one more quick pint before kick off.
Bala were slow to get into the game and conceded an early try when quick hands from Bosworth gave pacey winger Tim Howard the space to score in the corner. Not to be outdone, the Bala forwards drove the ball up the pitch and centre Paul Hanmer smashed through the Bosworth defence to level the score at 5-5.
Bosworth’s quick backs responded with another fine try minutes later, when Tim Howard combined with veteran fullback, Larry Holmes, and scrum half, Nick Fennell, to score his second of the day. Bala forwards fought their way back up the field and flanker Rhys Morris shrugged off several tackles to score under the posts and bring the half time score to 12-10.
Bala scored two more unanswered tries in the second half when number eight Dochan Gwyn Roberts grounded the ball from a push over scrum and scrum half Ilan Tal y Bont sidestepped his opposite number to sneak in the corner. There would have been another try had Robin Cablyd not ignored an eight man overlap on the Bosworth try line just before the final whistle! The game ended12-24 to Bala.
Much fun was had by all that evening watching the Autumn internationals, arm wrestling, singing hymns and enjoying the exotic dancing.
Club physio, Alwyn Ambiwlans, was kept busy after the match as several of the Bala support crew injured themselves in the post match festivities. Chairman, Tony Parry, sprained his shoulder whilst taking a short cut through a hedge and Pete Bach appeared to have been mauled by a dog when he turned up for breakfast in the morning although it is unclear how he sustained his injuries.
Clwb Rygbi’r Bala would like to thank Market Bosworth Rugby Club for their warm welcome and look forward to many more tours to come between the two clubs.
