Following report kindly supplied by Bro Ffestiniog RFC.
Bro ended a run of 4 league defeats with an emphatic bonus point win against struggling Abergele - the hosts securing the bonus point before half time and including a brace of tries each for captain Dewi James and prop Dylan Jones.
The conditions throughout the day had been terrible but the match went ahead with a very wet and muddy pitch. Ffestiniog's first try came on seven minutes from a scrum inside the visitors 22, two phases later Simon Kalafusz crossing over for an unconverted try.
Another scrum saw Bro recycle well but after 6 phases Abergele were awarded a penalty for holding on. The kick missed touch and Bro attacked once more through backs and forwards the move culminating in prop Dylan Jones scoring a try which also went unconverted.
Gele went close through a strong run from scrum half Joel Stirling but the ball was knocked on in a tackle.
On 25 minutes a turnover by Bro on their own 10m line was passed out through the backs centre Aron Aspden unselfishly passing to full back Mathew Hayden to score under the posts - wing Ian Roberts adding the conversion.
Gele were then awarded a penalty for offside and the fly half successful kick from 30m split the posts.
The bonus point try came from a turnover on the visitors 22 by Dewi James - the number 8 found a gap and scythed through to score - Roberts adding the extras.
Gele's scrum half tried to get his side on the front foot through a quick tap penalty but with no support Bro easily won turnover and cleared.
The sides went into the break with the score at 24 - 3.
From the re-start Gele won a scum against the head and the ball was whipped out through the backs to left wing Jack Goronw - but only meters from the try-line he was tackled into touch.
This spurned the visitors and another well worked attack saw full back Kgosi Ngwenyo go close and as Gele recycled Bro were penalised for offside. They chose to kick for touch but Bro won the ensuing lineout and yet another attack thwarted.
Bro were awarded an attacking scrum 5 but as the ball was spread out Ngwenyo intercepted and would have had a clear run for the try line but for a knock on. Another scrum was set but this time the passes went through hands and right wing Steve Lay crashed over in the corner for an unconverted try.
The visitors scored next after some good rucking and mauling the drove towards the line - number 8 Josh Woods scoring but the conversion was missed.
A poor clearance kick inside their own 22 by Gele was gathered by Bro - 5 phases later Dylan Jones claimed his second with Hayden adding the extras.
By the end of the match the scrums went un contested and an easy pick up and go saw Dewi James also claiming his second try and Hayden once more converted.
