Following report kindly supplied by Caernarfon RFC.
Caernarfon's season came to a close with a convincing, yet low key affair on the Morfa to leave them above their opponents in the final league standings.
The Cofis bossed the tackle area from the off and had an abundance of possession but failed to transfer the dominance on to the scoreboard until a purple patch during the third quarter. Indeed Dinbych could well have taken an early lead when their constantly lively blindside flanker Dafydd Jones charged down an attempted clearance but just failed to gather cleanly.
The much anticipated breakthrough came after fifteen minutes when Carwyn Roberts delayed his pass sufficiently to afford on rushing centre Iolo Hughes to hit a perfect angle and break clear towards the try line from some forty yards. Aled Jones added the conversion from in front to better the effort.
Mac Jones and Liam Leung gave the Cofis further forward momentum with Dinbych winger Kieran Bonar looking to be the most potent threat to the Cofis when in possession. Eventually on the half hour a further five points were added when a speculative hack on was fumbled, allowing the predatory nature of Cofi winger Owain Williams to capitalise on a fortuitous bounce and plough over out wide.
The Cofis remained quite composed when Dinbych put them under a little pressure at the beginning of the second half and soon pounced after working their way back to mid-field. A scrum pick up by Mac Jones was offloaded to scrum half Rhodri Jones who in turn released Carwyn Roberts at pace and at such an angle that the defence was split. Roberts's pace did the rest as he sprinted clear from the half way line to score a fine individual try again converted by Aled Jones.
Minutes later Roberts confused the defence again but on this occasion fed centre Dafydd Lloyd Williams who weaved his way over to extend the lead. Jones again converted and nearly from the restart broke from distance himself. Just as it appeared that the opportunity had been lost he floated a pass to on rushing debutant Iwan Parry who gleefully accepted and scored in the corner.
Dinbych eventually got a few good phases together and rumbled their way towards the home try line with the pressure resulting in two yellow cards being issued in quick succession. The persistence of the forward effort eventually reaped rewards as Number 8, Robin Williams controlled from the back of the scrum before picking up and charging over. Fullback Gruff Roberts added the conversion to afford seven consolation points to the visitors and draw the game and current season to a close.
Caernarfon will reflect on a mixed season results wise, having notched only seven wins, however their losing bonus point tally is in excess of all others, meaning that another six games were very evenly contested. Come next season such games will need to be won so that a winning mentality and momentum can be gained from the off.
