The first half of this Super Cup encounter was a gruelling energy-sapping affair with neither side willing to concede an inch of territory if at all possible.
The Caernarfon forwards had driven at the heart of the Gwernyfed defence time and time again whereas the visitors were more concerned with spreading the ball wide to utilise the pace of Katie Hugheson at centre. Fifteen minutes of both tactics had not proved successful but the intervention of fullback Annia Coelik at pace on an inside break led to an opening that saw her scamper all of sixty meters to score a fine individual try. Delyth Thomas converted from in front of the posts to grant a seven point lead.
Try as they may the Cofis could not conjure a means of unnerving the solid Gwernyfed defence although they were winning the territorial battle and forcing a high tackle count.
As halftime was approaching two penalties conceded in quick succession allowed the Cofis the opportunity to place some points on the scoreboard and Sera Bailey duly obliged with the second effort at the posts.
Playing downhill the Cofis began dominating the set scrums and from one take against the head Rhian Gwawr set off on a run that drew the cover prior to releasing scrumhalf Jess Kavanagh who had the pace to complete the task of scoring beneath the posts. Bailey’s conversion gave the Cofis the lead some five minutes into the half.
Indeed Sera was instrumental in Caernarfon’s next score as she fielded a high ball and counterattacked with aplomb prior to offloading to Jess Kavanagh who spun to the blindside to find a gap to score her second of the day.
At this point Gwernyfed were finding clearing their lines difficult as Caernarfon were challenging effectively for both scrum and lineout ball. A fumble in defence led to a hack through and the onrushing Leonie Webster on her home debut was the first to react and win the chase to ground and extend the Cofi lead to thirteen points. Bailey again converted.
The Gwernyfed cause was hampered by the loss of fullback Coelik and later forward kingpin Lilly Snape, meanwhile the Cofi bench had helped as fresh legs were certainly required, Kirsty Holdsworth revelled in her shortest route drives and one such incursion was taken on by Sera Bailey who found centre Lauren Hassett at hand to score out wide.
As the game was drawing to a close a series of forward charges put the Gwernyfed rearguard under pressure once again and although another Webster charge was halted, Sera Bailey was at hand to charge over and convert to bring the scoring and a highly competitive game to a close.
