Nant make it to Final of North Wales Cup
An excellent match resulted in a convincing scoreline for the visitors as Division One side Nant overcame stubborn resistance from COBRA.
Nant will play the winners of Bro Ffestiniog v Caernarfon which takes place this coming Saturday, 19th March.
Full report from Nant Conwy Secretary, Ifor Glyn, follows...
Sgorwyr Nant Scorers:
Ceisiau / Tries: Grant Jones (2), Carwyn Ellis (2), Ifan Jones (1), Elgan Davies (1), Carwyn Roberts (1)
Trosi / Conversions: Andre Hughes (2)
Cosb / Penalties: Andre Hughes (1)
Nant went on the attack immediately from the start. COBRA failed to gather the kick off cleanly and Nant passed the ball purposefully along the line so that Grant managed to touch down in the corner. He failed to convert his own try. After 4 minutes play, Ifan hoodwinked the home defence completely with a double sidestep to touch down underneath the posts. Andre converted. Nant continued to press but, after 12 minutes, the ball was dropped in the COBRA 22, was hacked up field and the race for the touchdown was won by Richard Jones, the speedy home no.11. This try was converted by Alwyn Williams. Andre scores his only penalty on 17 minutes whilst Alwyn Williams replied in a similar manner after 25 minutes. Grant then scored a similar try to his first after 29 minutes – again unconverted. COBRA had what turned out to be their last score of the match by a penalty kick by Alwyn Williams just before the half time whistle to give a score of 13-20 at the break.
Nat were the masters during the second half, especially so the pack as was shown by four tries being scored by the forwards: two from the base of the scrum by no.8, Carwyn, one when Elgan, the Captain and prop forward barged his way over and lock, Carwyn R’s first try for the Club when he stretched his long arm to touch down just over the line.. Andre was close with all conversion attempts but his final attempt was adjudged to be on the correct side of the posts to make a final score of 13 – 42.
In the final, Nant will play either Bro Ffestiniog or Caernarfon early in May.
Nant’s next match will be home against Llandudno on Saturday, 26th March 2011.
Dechreuodd Nant ar dan o’r cychwyn cyntaf. Bu i GOBRA fethu a dal y bel o’r gic gyntaf a llwyddodd Nant i ledu’r bel ar hyd y cae i alluogi Grant sgorio cais yn y gornel na fu iddo’i drosi. O fewn 4 munud, torrodd Ifan yr amddiffyn yn gelfydd trwy ochrgamu ddwywaith i sgorio o dan y pyst gydag Andre’n trosi. Ar ôl 12 munud, a Nant yn dal i bwyso, gollyngwyd un bel a chiciwyd hi ymhell i fyny’r cae gan y tîm cartref a llwyddodd eu hasgellwr chwim i dirio ger y pyst. Troswyd y cais gan Alwyn Williams. Chwarter ffordd drwy’r gêm, llwyddodd Andre gyda chic gosb. Ymatebodd Alwyn Williams yn yr un modd i GOBRA ar ôl 25 munud cyn i Grant sgorio’i ail gais - un tebyg iawn i’r cyntaf, ar ôl hanner awr. Ni throswyd y cais hwn ac unig sgôr arall yr hanner oedd cic gosb arall gan Alwyn Williams i wneud sgôr o 13 - 20 ar yr hanner.
Nant oedd yn feistri trwy’r ail hanner gan na fu i GOBRA sgorio ychwaneg o bwyntiau. Daeth y pac yn fwy pwerus a ddangoswyd trwy i Carwyn E (rhif 8) sgorio dau gais o fôn y sgrym - un ar ôl 8 munud a’r llall ar ôl 36 munud. Sgoriodd y prop, Elgan, gais hefyd ar ôl 13 munud a braf oedd gweld Carwyn R (rhif 4) yn ymestyn ei fraich hir i sgorio’i gais cyntaf tros y Clwb. Bu Andre’n hynod agos i ychwanegu’r pwyntiau ar sawl achlysur ond llwyddodd gyda’r cais olaf un i wneud sgôr derfynol o 13 - 42.
Chwaraeir naill ai Bro Ffestiniog neu Gaernarfon yn y rownd derfynol ddechrau Mai
Gêm nesaf Nant fydd gartref yn erbyn Llandudno ar 26ain Mawrth 2011.
