Dolgellau took valuable points against a determined Colwyn Bay side in today’s North Wales National League One fixture. With both sides occupying the lower section of the table, a good result was key to improvement in league standings. Spectators were treated to a keenly fought contest played with tempo and purpose.
Dolgellau front eight showed early dominance in the set piece which resulted in territorial advantage. The resulting possession and territory kept the home team in their back third of the pitch for much of the first half. Colwyn’s back line worked hard to provide cover defence and to their credit, thwarted chances by Dafydd Elis on the left wing, Dylan Evans at thirteen and an impressive back row Marius Jones.
It took some twenty five minutes for the first points to come Dolgellau way when Henri Roberts (15) burst through the Bay defensive line from ten metres off quick ruck ball. The extras were taken to put Dolgellau seven points to the good. The visitors stretched their lead further through the boot of Henri Roberts off a Colwyn Bay infringement on the thirty five minute mark.
Colwyn started the second period with more intent but Dolgellau were able to hold out until a Dolgellau infringement in their own twenty two awarded the home side with a free play and a deft kick to the right wing was gathered and an unconverted try resulted after sixty minutes of play. Colwyn Bay drew level three minutes later when they caught the Dolgellau defence off guard with a try wide left, again unconverted.
Injuries to the home team resulted in an uncontested scrum format and a rearranged back line. This improved the possession and territory for Colwyn Bay, with the last fifteen minutes of play being nip and tuck. It was Dolgellau who scored first to break the deadlock, Dylan Evans combining with replacement left wing Rhys Lewis, who used his pace to beat the scramble cover defence and stretched to score a memorable try. Henri Roberts added the two points to put Dolgellau back in the lead by seven.
Dolgellau right wing Rob Pugh gathered a cross field kick from standoff Gerwyn Thomas with five minutes remaining to extend Dolgellau’s lead by a further five points.
With a score line of 10:22 the game looked to be slipping away from Colwyn Bay, when the home team full back found a way through the visitors defence to score a late try between the posts. The quickly taken conversion gave Colwyn Bay a loosing bonus point and a chance of a possible victory. Dolgellau however closed out the game when Colwyn Bay were adjudged to have infringed on full time with a tap and kick to touch.
A good contest and a deserved bonus point to Colwyn Bay. Dolgellau will be satisfied with a victory on the road and continue to improve as a team. Final score 17:22.
