RGC News caught up with Phil Davies who will continue to be at RGC alongside his role as Head Coach of Namibia for the Rugby World Cup.
"First of all I am delighted to be staying with RGC for another year, and I can’t thank the supporters, staff and players enough for their effort last year and that was a major reason for making a commitment to RGC and building on last season’s achievements.
I also have to give a huge thanks to all our sponsors who have backed us, as without them we wouldn’t be able to put the development plans in place. On a personal note I would like to thank Halliwell Jones and Dave Roberts for their support over the past year.
Once of the key things we want to do is develop the pool of coaches in North Wales and we have a new structure in place. I have enjoyed working with Josh Leach and he will continue to be a part of the coaching set up alongside Jason Roberts who joins from Llandudno to look after the scrum and forwards alongside myself. We also have Latham Tawhai who comes in from the U18s as defence coach, and his Rugby League experience will add a new dimension to the senior side. Marc Roberts will also play a supporting role to the coaching team, which adds to the strong unit for the upcoming season.
We are back in training Tuesday (June 30th) and we will be looking to build on what we achieved last season as a group. It is important we look to create the team from a base of North Walian players who will grow and develop within RGC. This will be key for us as the experienced players may not always be able to play due to work commitments.
We are looking to put structures in place for the playing squad with the appointment of a Club Captain who will be responsible for setting our values and standards both on and off the field and representing RGC within the community, alongside a Captain and 3 Vice-Captains for on-field duties.
I am proud of what the players have achieved over the past 3 years, and credit has to go to the coaches and players who have played a part in doing that. Now we look to move forward playing that high intensity, skilful rugby that the fans want to see, but be able to deliver it week in week out both home and away.
The challenge is massive with money being spent by the other sides including Merthyr and Pontypool, but we have outstanding facilities and along with Rupert’s philosophy we want to develop and see the player pool growth organically. We have the foundations in place to do that the right way, and if we work to the plan then the goals we have set out will be reached.
I have been involved with Namibia since October and my commitment to them and the Rugby World Cup was always factored into RGC so my Head Coach role hasn’t changed the picture.
It will be a great experience to lead a team in the Rugby World Cup and hopefully I bring back that experience to RGC. Andy Jones will be involved as the Analyst for Namibia so we will be proud to represent RGC in the upcoming months.
We are looking to build on the links between us and Namibia so that coaches, staff, and players can benefit either from coming over here or going out to Namibia to gain new experiences.
It is an exciting time for myself and RGC and I am looking forward the season ahead."
