Dinbycyh's 1st fixture of the 2014/15 season saw Captain Matt Hulse's old side journey over to Caeau Les Phillips. A good test for both sides.
Courageous visitors unable to halt Hulse's heroes - Denbigh 43 v Altrincham Kersal 31
Dinbych opened their pre-season friendly programme in fine style with a convincing victory over a competitive Altrincham Kersal side in a twelve try encounter. Surprisingly both teams found difficulty breaching the opposing defences from set piece moves with with the result that most of the scores come from broken play or spectacular long range counterattacks. In a workmanlike performance by the Dinbych pack Dafydd Jones converted to hooker shone in the loose whilst the Dinbych backs were always dangerous with Outside half Dan O'Sullivan the catalyst for incisive running especially by Man of the Match Sion Rowlands and Tom Seddon who crossed for a hat trick of tries.
Dinbych had the better of the early play and went ahead after a quarter of an hour following heavy pressure in the Altrincham 22 who thought they had survived only for Centre Tom Seddon to gain possession from a rebounded grubber kick following a 5 metre line out to cut through and cross in the corner before rounding to touch down under the posts leaving an easy conversion for Dan O'Sullivan. Altrincham replied eight minutes later when they took advantage of a failure by Dinbych to retain possession as they tried to break out of their 22 for second row Steve Richardson to plunge over near the posts for a try which surprisingly went unconverted. Dinbych increased their lead when Dan O'Sullivan broke down the blind side just inside the Altrincham half to put Wing George Owen over for an unconverted try. Live wire scrum half Garin Roberts then went over in the corner for his first senior try after another Dan O'Sullivan break. Just before the interval poor defence by Dinbych allowed the visitors back into the game when No.8 John Bishop crossed for a try converted by outside half Ben Harris.
Leading by seventeen points to twelve Dinbych again had the better of the early second half play and after a number of short range forward drives had been repulsed by a determined Altrincham defence flanker Liam Allsup-Jones forced his way over wide out for an unconverted try. Once again Altrincham replied taking advantage of poor Dinbych tackling to score near the posts with the conversion reducing the deficit to three points. Dinbych replied positively forcing a number of scrums near the Altrincham line with the visitors eventually conceding a penalty try converted by Dan O'Sullivan. Dinbych went further ahead with a spectacular try started from their own half with George Owen fielding an Altrincham relieving kick and an incisive run by skipper Matt Hulse putting Tom Seddon over for a try converted by Dan O'Sullivan.
Ten minutes from time Dinbych extended their lead even further with another long range attack from their own 22 started by replacement Scrum Half Lee Parkes releasing wing Aidyn Jones with Dan O'Sullivan in support to end with Tom Seddon finishing it off with his hat trick try which was again converted by Dan O'Sullivan. In the final five minutes Altrincham reduced the deficit and gained some respectability for their competitive effort throughout with two converted tries both by good attacking play from near halfway.
Next Saturday Dinbych travel to play Oswestry in their second pre season friendly. Kick Off: 2.30pm.
