Following report kindly supplied by Dolgellau RFC.
Dolgellau can deservedly celebrate a rare taste of success, following this entertaining tussle against local rivals Bro on a windy but dry Marian, but they had to come from 0-8 down to record their second win of the season.
Bro had the advantage of a stiff westerley during the opening period and following a scrum on the home 22, in the eighth minute, centre Callum Evans carved an opening for himself and diced his way under the posts for the try. However he skewed the conversion wide, leaving Bro 0-5 ahead.
The effort of both sides was commendable, and play became frantic high-octane stuff, with neither side able to hang on to possession for any decent period of time.
A high tackle resulted in Bro stretching their lead to 8-0 with Evans on traget this time. Dolgellau needed to respond, which they did, and stand-off, Gwion Jones, slotted over a difficult penalty from 30metres only two minutes later. Jones made it 6-8 with his second penalty on the half hour mark, and wing Owain Kelly and flanker Tim Jones came within a whisker of scoring wide out on the left corner.
But Dolgellau deservedly went ahead with only three minutes of the half remaining.
Young prop Dafydd Jones, who was excellent throughout, barged on from a lineout, and skipper Rhys Roberts squeezed over for the try. Gwion Jones converted well from a difficult angle to give the hosts a 13-8 lead at the interval.
There was no easing off from either side during a tense second half, both sides receiving a yellow card. Bro came right back into it after twelve minutes with Callum Evans adding a second penalty to make it 13-11. It was all happening, and Dolgellau stand-off Gwion Jones superb tackle on Bro Full back, Carwyn Jones to stop the try. Stalwart, Dewi Thomas, came on for the hosts, but his welcome return lasted 11 minutes before leaving with a yellow card for deliberate knock on.
However, home nerves, were settled somewhat with 10 minutes to go as Dolgellau scored a memorable try to seal it. Hooker, Elis Smith gathered a Bro clearance on half way, and sent centre Simon Jones on his way, but wing Owain Kelly had plenty to do to out pace the visitor’s cover to score out in tne corner. 18-11.
Bro still had time to level matters, but it was Dolgellau’s day and they held on bravely for a a great win.
