Dolgellau U16's continue to impress with a fine display of 10 aside rugby at today's tournament in Llanidloes.
Dolgellau U16s Runners Up in Llanidloes 10s Tournament
The squad had an early start to arrive in Llanidloes of 9:30 only to find out our first game was not until after midday.
Still the Dolgellau boys kept their focus and started well against Newtown who were the first opponents of the day going up early on with a try from Henri Tomos Roberts (Captain) who also added the two points. Newtown broke back to take a try but failed to draw level on points. Dolgellau however picked up the pace with a try fest from Dafydd Roberts, Jake Hinge, Dafydd Bryan and Dafydd George. Henri took one of the remaining conversions to end the game comfortable winners at 29:5
The second game against Shotton Steel saw Lewis Jones open the scoring with a nice try from the base of the scrum, Henri and Jake Hinge added one a piece and Henri managed three conversions to round off a 21:0 victory.
After a long wait, Dolgellau then faced Wrexham in the final decider. Dolgellau needing to beat Wrexham and score three tries to ensure their place in the final. Dolgellau again opened the account with Lewis, crossing in the first half. Wrexham came back with a try to the corner from a breakout and a well struck conversion edged them onto the lead going into the break. The Dolgellau boys rallied and three tries in quick succession from Henri put pay to the Wrexham challenge. Final score was 24:7.
A quick turnaround for the final gave little time for Dolgellau to rest before taking on Gwernyfed. A fiercely contested match which saw Dolgellau being beaten by a better team. Despite Dolgellau loosing players to injury, they kept at the opposition and were rewarded with a good breakout try from Meirion Evans late in the second half before leaving the field himself with a hand injury. Final score was 29:5 to Gwernyfed.
A great team performance with all of the squad members playing a vital role in delivering what is becoming a typical Dolgellau performance.
Osian Lewis Smith, Elis Smith Daf Jones, Steffan Parry all showed outstanding sportsmanship by running out for Bala for two games who turned up with seven players on the day.
