Gary Williams of The Oval Zone takes a look at the remarkable season that the Llanrwst club are enjoying.
I know, you can hardly compare the two as we all know that the wage bill at Nant is far higher than Man City, but thought it might be a headline to grab your attention…
As we head back to a weekend of league rugby, it’s time to remind everybody of what a season that Nant Conwy, the Llanrwst-based club are having.
Like Man City (see there was a reason for mentioning them in the headline), Nant are still in every competition that they have entered this season. Leading Division One and with the destination of the league title in their own hands, they are also the last remaining North Wales club in the WRU Plate, with a massive home game against Maesteg Quins looming on March 10th and, I’m sure, that all reading this will wish them well in that fixture.
On top of this, they are the first club through to the Conwy Land Rover North Wales Senior Cup semi-finals following an exciting 13-21 win at Llandudno last weekend.
So, top of Division One North, last eight of the WRU Plate and first team in the semis of the North Wales Cup, that is impressive.
And, if that’s not enough, their second team, Teirw Nant, are at it as well…
Enjoying their first season in the WRU National League structure, they have dispelled any doubts about whether second strings could hold their own as they top Division Three North and, with only a resurgent Holyhead in second place with a realistic chance of topping them, they, like their first team, are favourites to take the title and become, possibly, the first Welsh rugby club to have two National League titles in the same season. Time will tell.
They also are in the running for a North Wales League and Cup double, having reached the semi finals of the Conwy Land Rover Intermediate Cup. However, they are up against some tough opposition in Division Two high-flyers Dinbych, Shotton and the winners of Llanidloes v COBRA. The whole of the North Wales rugby fraternity will be watching these semis with interest.
There is a treble to be fought for by the second team boys as they are also in the Gwynedd Cup, with a home game against Caernarfon 2nds next up.
Regardless of how many of the six available trophies end up winging their way to Nant Conwy, it has once again been a fantastic season.
These achievement don’t come without a lot of hard work and you only have to visit Nant on a match day and see the professional attitude that is adopted, with every attention to detail taken care of, and a steely determination to be the best.
The club have come a long way in a very short time, having only been established in 1980 and I’m proud to say that I saw the potential when I was on the vetting committee of the Welsh Districts Rugby Union and wholeheartedly pushed for the Pant Carw club to become full members of the WRU. Also very pleasing to see other North Wales clubs climbing the ladder in such a short space of time.
Pretty sure that there are going to be wide-angle lenses needed on the cameras at the Nant end of season dinner just to get the trophies in because we haven’t even mentioned the Youths yet! By the way, I've got a wide-angled lens, hint, hint.
Great club, great season and all the best in the WRU Plate and just kidding about the wage bill… I think! ?
