North Wales' George North is on track to take over from Shane Williams as Wales’ new speed-king
For years, it’s been wing wizard Williams who has led the way in the sprint stakes, particularly over the shorter distances.
But now teenage sensation North is set to race ahead of him, with Wales’ fitness chief tipping him to break all records.
The new kid off the blocks has already recorded some startling times in training and his coronation as Wales’ speed-king looks certain to be confirmed over the next couple of weeks.
With sprint testing coming up, the identity of the fastest man in the Welsh squad will soon be confirmed and Scarlets winger North is the red-hot favourite to claim that title.
“It isn’t George officially right now, but it will be,” predicted WRU head of strength and conditioning Adam Beard.
“At the moment, it’s still Shane over 10 metres, then Leigh Halfpenny and Jamie Roberts is up there as well. He’s improved a lot.
“But George will smash all the records. I’ve seen him run 4.5 seconds for 40 metres unofficially a couple of weeks ago.
“That’s right up there with the fastest guys in world rugby.
“Unofficially he’s pretty much broken all of our records. I just haven’t tested him with the group yet. I do that in a couple of weeks and he’s the one I’d put my money on!
“What I’m more interested in with George is the momentum he creates, with that kind of speed and weight.”
