Gogledd Cymru U15 34 v Rhymney Valley U15 7 - match report by Dai Higgs, WRU Development Officer, Gogledd South
An aggressive and well organised North Wales U15 side comprehensively won the Amdahl bowl with a six tries to one win over Rhymney Valley at St Helens, Swansea on Saturday. The young guns took a quick 10 nil lead, first from a powerful drive by Josh Roberts [Llandudno/Ysgol John Bright] who crashed over for the opener, then quickly followed by the pick of the bunch which came from a turnover went from one side of the field to the other showing some great running lines and swift clinical hands to put Dominic Morris [Mold/Argoed High School] over in the corner. This finally spurred an expected onslaught from their South Wales counterparts who would have taking a better grip on the game if it wasn’t for the young Gogs belligerent defence and destructive counter rucking game, all but snuffing out any continuity from the Rhym’s half breaks.
The first half finally ended in the same vain with the Rhym’s hammering the Gogs goal line but as with the other early encounters NW boys held out, turned the ball over, cleared the ball however this time for the well earned sanctuary of the half time huddle.
Yet to hit full throttle the second half started as it ended the southern lads smashing into the young Gogs who continued to win the contact area and from this another turnover saw Dewi Bowen [Newtown/Llanfyllin High School] race away from his own 5 meter line to eventually put Connar Kendrick [Flint/Holywell High School] away to score behind the posts. This try seemed to break the resolve of any come back from Rhymney and lifted the young Gogs to turn on the power in attack as well as defence.
Further tries rolled in from Ieuan Owen [Caernarfon/Ysgol Dyffryn Nantue], Joe Mills [Llanidloes/Llanidloes high School] and Will Mackereth [Llanfyllin High School]. Completed with two conversions from Tom Williams (Newtown/Welshpool High School] putting the game well out of the opposition reach before letting them in for a consolation try from their big powerful 8.
The boys left the best to last, complementing the hard work shown on and off the field by the players, coaches, management and parents. Well done to each and every one of you.
