With the Autumn Tests over its back to full league action on Saturday.(Week10)
As we near the half way mark its very tight at the top with Nant edging to pole position followed by Caernarfon and Pwllheli who have a game in hand. Early days but will the eventual winners come from the current leading bunch of these three plus Bala, Bro and Llandudno ?. There is a lot of rugby to be played but slip ups at both ends of the table could prove costly. It makes for exciting encounters over coming weeks and this Saturday's matches are no exception.
We start at Pentre Mawr where luckless bottom club Abergele still seeking their first win of the season welcome Mold (8th). The visitors match last week fell foul of the ice but they have shown good recent form. Last time it was a thrilling 24-24 draw- and the visitors may go one better this time round to take the points.
Bala who occupy 4th place welcome old foes Bethesda who have slipped to 9th position following a run of three straight defeats. This will be a tough ask for the visitors as Bala's coaching team pulled no punches in their post mortems of recent close league defeats and are determined to get back to winning ways. It was a close 18-17 home win last time and they should have enough to bag the points again to keep up with the leading pack.
Bro (5th) who have lost their last two matches welcome Caernarfon who have impressed this season and are in second position. The hosts need to re capture their excellent early season form but it will not be easy against a well organised Cofis side who should have enough to take the spoils.
New leaders Nant make the short journey down the valley to Colwyn Bay (8th). The home side had an excellent win at Bethesda last time out but will find in form and a free scoring Nant side a different proposition. Away win on the cards here.
Current champions Pwllheli entertain Llandudno (6th). The Lleyn men were frozen out last week as the warm Gulf Stream Drift failed to reach Mold which means they are now two matches adrift. Both these teams served up a classic at Maesdu Road at the end of last season with the narrow Pwllheli victory clinching the title. Tudno lost 39-13 on their last visit, could be closer this time but the home side remain favourites.
We have real basement showdown at Rhuthun (11th) when they host COBRA (10th). The hosts come into the match on the back of a good away win at Abergele last time out. They also beat the visitors at home in a recent Conwy Land Rover North Wales Cup tie in a close encounter. There is a lot at stake in this game and it could go to the wire and as such is difficult to predict. COBRA playing to their potential could return to Meifod in high spirits on Saturday evening but the Blues are on a confidence boosting roll and this could be enough for them to clock up their first home league win of the season.
(In addition to full Div 2 fixtures there is some great youth rugby this weekend as our local clubs strive to get through to the next rounds In the WRU Cup/Plate/Bowl comps. Best of luck/pob llwyddiant i- Cup- Nant, Wrexham. Plate- Llangefni a Bowl- Dolgellau a Welshpool.)
