COLWYN BAY RUGBY CLUB
Colwyn Bay U14’s V Bro Ffestiniog U14’s
CBRFC welcomed Bro Ffestiniog U14's for the first time to Brookfield Drive on a wet and cold mid December morning (so no change there for the Bro boys weather wise). Bro brought with them 11 players and so it was agreed that some of our boys would make up the numbers as we had 19 turn up.
On that note well done to all those boys who did don a Bro shirt at some stage during the two halves/games.
The first period of 30 minutes begun when Bro kicked off and within seconds Eben Van Der Schyff used his strength and power to cross over for a try to make it 5 to 0 for the home team.
It was one of those days where conversions weren’t going to make a particular difference to the result so after a quick missed drop kick it was back to open play. A further try from Tom Brook and another for Wil Thomas saw the home team up 17 nil within 10 minutes after one was converted by Jack Williams.
Within another minute Byron Wilson-Noon had crossed over too for a 22 point lead. It was decided to make a change after 13 minutes and so Eben swapped shirts for the remainder of the half.
It wasn’t enough for Bro however with three more tries coming from Tom Brook, John Cort and Byron and 1 JW conversion to make it 39-0 when Coach turned referee Peter Ryan blew the whistle to end that period of play.
Bay did not have all the play in the first period as the score suggested as a couple of great tackles from Josh Townend stopped Bro from scoring at least 10 points.
The second period began from scratch at nil nil and with more changes as Byron strengthened the away team further.
Colwyn Bay kicked off and soon managed to turn over the ball. Matthew Richards jinxed his way through a few players and just before being tackled into touch 30 metres out managed to get his left boot to the ball.
Ethan Ryan was in hot pursuit and to great cheer from the home support picked up the ball and dived over to make it 5-0. A second try for John Cort and a first for Matthew Richards soon made it 15-0.
Sam Ashman, Jack Manfredi, Luke Rowlands and Byron created some difficulties for their team mates playing in the opposite direction and broke through the ranks time after time. This helped their new Bro mates to score four tries and convert two of those to put them ahead 24-15 (Sam got one of those tries I think).
John Cort then scored his hat trick and a conversion from Jack saw the lead reduced to 24-22.
Bro fought back and increased their lead to make it 29-22 (but only just as Eben made a great tackle but the Bro players momentum took him over).
With a couple of minutes left Ciaran Bate scored when he took advantage of a Bro fumble on the try line to get his hand on the ball and exert just enough downward pressure to make it 29-27 in favour of Bro with a minute to go.
The last play of the game saw one more try and it was a pleasure to see Ethan score once again with a bit more effort required this time. Well done John Cort for not being too selfish as he could have crossed over 4 or 5 times during the game.
The last couple of training sessions have focused on tackling and so it was agreed before the game that MOTM would go to the individual with the highest tackle count but in reality it was difficult given the swaps etc (it could have gone to Cai Jones, John, Matthew or a number of others).
So, it goes to Josh for his try saving tackles as they stood out more.
Like me, not sure if Pete wants to make a new hobby of reffing. The win wasn’t in doubt but trying to keep score on a wet and windy day wasn’t easy.
On my paper Bro scored 27 with a few from Sam and Colwyn Bay landing circa 68. A great effort all round boys. Well done.
