Following report kindly supplied by Dinbych RFC.
The hosts started brightly with a string of powerful carries off their own scrum on the Dinbych 22 meter line, some excellent defending from Dinbych’s back row helped contain the home sides attack and the ball was soon turned over by Hooker Harry Collins before being dispatched down field.
A line out won by Dinbych gave the visitors an attacking position just within Llangefni’s half and following an advantage played for a high tackle the ball was quickly passed out to the on rushing Full Back Gruff Roberts. The fleet footed speedster beat three defenders on his way to the touchline and with the help of the upright slotted over an excellent conversion from the touchline.
From the restart Dinbych were immediately penalised for an offence at a ruck and gifted Llangefni the opportunity to draw back within 4 points. Luckily for Dinbych the wet conditions and gusts of wind pushed the kick wide and Dinbych remained 7-0 to the good.
That luck would be short lived however, Llangefni poached a Dinbych line out just outside the visitors 22 and proceeded to power into Dinbych’s defensive line. An organised Dinbych line looked to be holding firm until Llangefni created an overlap and with some precise passing their Inside Centre went over for an unconverted try in the corner.
Llangefni were back in Dinbych’s half soon after and following an infringement at a Scrum, the hosts were awarded a penalty which their Fly Half slotted over to retake the lead.
Possession and territory ebbed and flowed between the two teams and Dinbych were to regain the lead after an over eager Llangefni hand played the ball back in a ruck and concede a penalty right in front of his own posts. Up stepped Full Back Gruff Roberts to splice the posts and go ahead once again.
Dinbych were let of the hook again when the referee blew to award Llangefni a another opportunity to claim 3 points. The ball drifting left of the posts to leave Dinbych in the lead by 8-10.
The second half began with deteriorating weather conditions, the slippy ball making handling for both sides all the more difficult. Fly Half Garin Roberts and Full Back Gruff Roberts made several corner finder in an attempt to pin Llangefni back in their half. Dinbych would once again gift Llangefni an opportunity to regain the lead and a 40m attempt from Llangefni this time drifted to the right of the upright.
The home side’s forwards then took control of the points scoring for Llangefni when they barrelled their way deep into Dinbych’s 22, this time Dinbych were caught red handed as the ball was played on the floor. Llangefni’s hefty pack called for a scrum and an eagle eyed Llangefni forward spotted a gap in the defensive line to dive over beneath the posts. Llangefni’s Fly Half splicing the posts with ease to retake the lead, 15-10.
Dinbych sprang back to an immediate response with some powerful strikes into Llangefni’s 22. The referee’s whistle shrieked again as the defenders were penalised for an offence at the breakdown again. Gruff Roberts confidently sending the ball between the posts to go within 3 points of the hosts.
The visitors were growing confident now and pinned Llangefni back in their own half, an infringement at a Dinbych line out by Llangefni gifted the visitors the put in at a scrum and Scrum Half Garin Roberts combined superbly with Wing Kieran Bonar for the latter to cross over for an excellent try. Full Back Gruff Roberts converting from the tightest of angles to put Dinbych ahead once more.
The restart saw Llangefni once again take advantage of an infringement by Dinbych and the home side’s forwards once again proved their worth as they secured ball from their own scrum. Several short ranged carries setup one final surge which saw Llangefni burst through the defence to score, a simple enough conversion taking Llangefni back in front.
Dinbych then conspired to be the architects of their own downfall, firstly gifting Llangefni a penalty which they duly converted from 38m out.
Then from an attack in Llangefni’s half, the ball was regained by the hosts and sent downfield. A lack of concentration along with the slippery ball saw possession knocked on into the grateful hands of the on coming Llangefni attack, and with two well timed offloads Llangefni touched down for their final try of the afternoon and a final score of 32-20 to the hosts.
Dinbych will rue the missed opportunity to return from Anglesey with any league points and will have to erase the errors displayed at Cae Smyrna when they host Caernarfon RFC on Saturday, December 7th at Maes Terry Bryer.
