Llangefni Youth 44 – v - Denbigh Youth 10. Saturday 10th September 2011.
The first game of their competitive season, and having won two out of two of their pre-season friendlies, the Cae Smyrna outfit were ready to deliver and this they did in style winning 44 – 10 to Denbigh who, as the game progressed became out played in all aspects of the game.
With Referee Eirian Davies in charge, Denbigh kicked off the game with a strong wind to their backs in wet conditions. Kicking up field and gaining territory, Cefni gained possession of the ball and came back at the Denbigh forwards, but with slippery conditions and just 10 minutes into the game Cefni were penalised for a ruck infringement and an opportunity for Denbigh to put the first points on the score board. The penalty kick cleanly taken by fly half Ellis Edwards, 0 – 3 to Denbigh.
Four minutes later however Llangefni came back, from a scrum awarded to Denbigh at the 22 meter line, a Denbigh infringement in the scrum gave Cefni a penalty which was quickly taken tap ball and passed out to the forwards, eventually to prop Paul Owain who crossed for the first try of the game, successfully converted by centre Rhodri Parry, the score 7 – 3. The next ten minutes saw Denbigh being awarded two penalties, opportunities to put themselves ahead on points, but each time with the strong blustering wind, were wide of the posts. The score at half time 7 – 3.
Second half saw Llangefni kick off, this time with wind advantage, and less than 8 minutes into the second half from a Cefni line out, Cefni retained the ball going through the phases to eventually forming a ruck; Denbigh were caught coming in from the side, a penalty awarded to Cefni on Denbigh`s 5 meter line, a quick tap penalty and out to Cefni flanker Tom Owen who went over the try line for Cefni`s second try, unsuccessfully converted, the score, 12 – 3. The game continued with Cefni scoring a third and fourth try.
The third some 7 minutes later by scrum half Aled Jones, successfully converted by centre Rhodri Parry, and the fourth by No. 8 Nathan Roberts but was unsuccessfully converted, the score opening up to 24 – 3. With Llangefni now feeling too comfortable, Denbigh saw the weakness in their defence when from a Denbigh scrum some 10 meters from the Cefni try line, Denbigh second row Alex Usher picked up the ball and was able to reach the Cefni try line, landing the ball, their first try successfully converted the score 24 – 10. But that was to be the last score for Denbigh. Llangefni retaliated and in the last 15 minutes of the game tries came from Cefni centre Gethin Parry Jones, centre Dyfed Evans, fly half Shaw Greaves and winger Dafydd Owen, but with four missed attempts at slotting the ball through the posts in the blustery conditions, the final score Llangefni 44, Denbigh 10.
Llangefni Youth next play North Wales Youth on Wednesday 14th September 2011 at Cae Smyrna, Llangefni - 7.30p.m. kick off. Llangefni look forward to the game which promises to be an exciting one to watch.
Llangefni seniors however lost 5 – 19 to Bala. With Bala beating Ruthin the week before they wanted another scalp and Cefni were their unfortunate targets. With referee Alun Thomas in charge Bala kicked off with wind advantage and saw the first half play going from one half to the other, neither team managing to pierce defences and neither team threatening the other. Eventually just before the half time whistle, from a Bala scrum 5 meter from the Cefni try line, the scrum was driven forward by the Bala pack allowing hooker Gethin Williams to touch down in the corner, an unsuccessful conversion saw Bala going in as the half time leaders 0 – 5.
Llangefni kicked off the second half, but failing to take full advantage of the wind early on in the half, through sloppy defence they allowed Bala fly half Rhydian Jones to run through three Cefni tackles and to cross the line, the second try for Bala which Jones converted making the score 0 – 12. Llangefni discipline was found wanting, with referee Thomas yellow carding three Cefni players in the second half, effectively laving Cefni with just 14 men for 30 minutes of the half. The third yellow card saw the resultant scrum, which Bala had opted for once more being driven over the try line allowing hooker Gethin Williams to score, this time converted by fly half Rhydian Jones, the score opening up to 0 – 19.
Llangefni, now with 15 men fought back at Bala, and were awarded for their efforts just minutes before the end of play, when a scrum awarded to Llangefni some 7 meters from the Bala try line, saw Cefni driving forward before the ball came out to scrum half Mark Gray who went over for the try, but with an unsuccessful conversion kick, the score at full time Llangefni 5, Bala 19.
Llangefni travel to Llandudno next Saturday 17th September 2011 and hope to get their first win of the season.
