Ruthin 46 v Bro Ffestiniog 11
Following report kindly supplied by Ruthin RFC.
Ruthin continued their good start to the season with a convincing win over Bro Ffestiniog at Caeddol on Saturday.
Bro were the first to get points on the board with 2 penalty goals kicked by fly half Matthew Williams within 10 minutes of the start. But Blues fly half Callum Bennett put the home side ahead with a converted try followed by a penalty goal.
Bennett then broke through Bro’s defence and offloaded to captain Chris Davies who went over the whitewash.
Ruthin were playing good rugby at this stage and another try followed when centre Shay Owen weaved up field and offloaded to wing Josh Wilson for his first try converted by Bennett.
At 22-6 down the visitors reduced the arrears with a try by Huw Parry but the gap widened again when Ruthin’s winger, also Huw Parry, bagged the Blues bonus point try.
Owen then finished the half off with a great try of his own also converted by Bennett and the teams went in for the break with Ruthin 34-11 ahead.
For the first 20 minutes of the second half the Blues defence was severely tested as the visitors tried to get over the try line.
Ruthin’s defence held but the pressure wasn’t released until Wilson intercepted a ball in his own half and broke away upfield for his second try converted by Bennett.
Wilson’s hat trick try came shortly afterwards and although the visitors fought until the end of the match they were unable to reduce the arrears and the whistle blew for full time with Ruthin winning 46-11.

Gyda maes Dolgellau’n sych ac yn edrych yn dda, gwelwyd gêm gystadleuol gyda blaenwyr Nant Conwy’n ennill goruchafiaeth drwy’r gêm gyfan. Torrwyd trwy’r amddiffyn wedi 5 munud ond trawyd y bas olaf ymlaen. Parhaodd Nant i bwyso a gorffenwyd ymosodiad trwy i’r asgellwr, Gwion, dirio yn y gornel dde wedi 8 munud. Bu i’r ymwelwyr barhau i bwyso drwy weddill yr hanner ond teimlad pur rhwystredig oedd ar yr hanner am fethu ag ychwanegu at y sgôr.
Fel sy’n digwydd yn aml, death y tîm cartref yn gyfartal wedi 6 munud o’r ail hanner gyda thoriad hynod gyflym o’r amddiffyn gan yr asgellwr Gerwyn. Bu i’r cais am drosiad daro’r postyn!. Daeth Nant yn ôl i’r gêm a chroeswyd y linell gais ddwywaith ond ni chaniatawyd y naill diriad na’r llall gan y dyfarnwr. Daeth y cais hirddisgwyliedig wedi 22 munud pan sgoriodd Robin, y prop pen rhydd ei gais cyntaf am y tymor wrth i’r pac cyfan hyrddio tros y linell gais. Bu i Ddolgellau amddiffyn yn arwrol am weddill y gêm gan gadw’r ymwelwyr allan tan yr amser ychwanegol. Wedi 41 munud, bu i Gwion, gicio cic gosb o bellter cyn i Aeron, oedd yn chwarae rhif 9 am y tro cyntaf erioed heddiw, gipio’r bêl o waelod sgrym 5 a thirio wedi 43 munud. Crafodd yr ymgais am drosiad yr ochr anghywir i’r postyn.
Dymunir yn dda i’r dyfarnwr, Mr Neil Addis a gafodd anaf i gyhyr yn ei goes rhyw chwarter awr cyn y diwedd ond mynnodd orffen dyfarnu’r gêm yn hytrach na dod ar ornest i ben yn fuan.
*
On a dry and really beautiful Dolgellau pitch, all present saw a competitive match with the home’s team defence really playing well against the visitors’ attacks. The nant Conwy pack were dominant throughout and the home defence was broken after 5 minutes but the final pass was knocked on! Three minutes later, the first score arrived after another free flowing attack by the back line which ended with a try in the right hand corner by Gwion, the winger. Nant continued to press for the remainder of the half but it was a frustrated set of players and visiting supporters at half time when all other attacks petered out for some reason or other.
As often happens, Dolgellau had an undeserved equaliser after 6 minutes play in the second half. The home team were defending in their own half yet again when winger, Gerwyn received a pass on the right wing and out sped everybody to score a try in the corner. The conversion attempt struck the post!
Nant’s long awaited try arrived after 22 minutes when, Robin (Parry) scored his first ever try for Nant as an open side prop as the entire pack rumbled over the try line. Dolgellau defended stoutly and heroically for the remainder of the match keeping the visiting attack at bay until the ‘added time’ at the end. After 41 minutes, Gwion converted a long distance penalty before Aeron, playing as a no. 9 for the first time ever, picked the ball up from the base of a scrum 5 to score a try after 43 minutes. The conversion attempt scraped the wrong side of the post!
Best wishes is sent to the Match Referee, Mr Neil Addis who sustained a leg muscular injury with about 15 minutes play left on the clock but decided to continue to officiate after receiving attention, rather than bringing the match to a premature end.

Llandrindod 16 v Llanrumney 13
Following report kindly supplied by Llandrindod RFC
This was by far Llandrindod's sternest text this season and though they did not exactly come through it with flying colours, they displayed a considerable degree of determination and no little skill to record a win against this highly competent Cardiff outfit. They also managed to keep their cool throughout when everyone else on the pitch seemed to be losing theirs, with Llanrumney being given no less than five yellow cards against Llandrindod's single one. Indeed, Llanrumney can consider themselves fortunate in not conceding a penalty try for persistent infringements close to their line in the first half.
Llanrumney started the match at considerable pace and it was a while before Llandrindod could stir themselves sufficiently to respond. Giving away too many penalties during this early period of the match saw the hosts go behind with a successful penalty kick by Neil Donahue but at last Llandrindod started to get the measure of the game and pressure in Llanrumney's half resulted in a try by Llandrindod'sTom Hughes after a series of mauls close to the Llanrumney line, initiated by Josh Hammond who was a problem to Llanrumney all through the match. Conversion from out wide by an unflappable Jac Holden. It was during this second quarter of the game that Llanrumney started to lose players to yellow cards and sometimes it was difficult to see how many men they actually had on the pitch! The first half eventually ended fairly tamely with Llandrindod in the lead 7-3 at the whistle but unable to take full advantage of Llanrumney's reduced numbers.
The second half started badly for Llandrindod. Loose play after a scrum and a subsequent defensive error gifted Llanrumney a try by Ian John, conversion by Donahue who, like his opposite number Holden, was adept at long kicks from difficult angles. Another Llanrumney penalty stretched their lead but two penalty kicks by Holden drew the scores level at 13 all. Llandrindod were now on top thanks to a series of driving runs by centre Stephen Boore who was proving very difficult to stop and the Llandrindod forwards who managed to stay the pace better than their opposition. Finally, on the 73rd minute of the match, Llanrumney conceded a penalty in front of the posts but some 45 metres out, and Holden kicked what proved to be the final score of the match.
Llandrindod have no match this weekend. Next weekend they travel to Cardiff Saracens in the League
Denbigh 2nds 14 v Bala 2nds 5
Following match report and picture kindly supplied by Bala RFC
The game got off to a fearsome start as South African openside flanker, Thabo, put in one of his trademark big hits on the Denbigh second row receiving the kick off.
Both teams tested each outer out for the next half an hour, with little to tell between the sides. Denbigh’s big pack had the ascendancy in the scrum but Bala’s more mobile forwards were first to the ruck. After a period of sustained pressure from Denbigh, their big number eight picked up from a five metre scrum and burrowed over the try line 28 minutes into the first half.
It was a big loss to Bala when their lively outside centre, Dyfrig Jones, had to leave the field following a knock to the head.
Denbigh grew in confidence and their pack continued to drive their way towards the try line. Valiant tackling from Thabo, Dafydd Drewgoed and Dyl Anderson wasn't enough to keep them out. After 35 minutes, a Denbigh rolling maul resulted in another converted try.
With the wind behind them and playing down the slope, Bala spent more time in the Denbigh half. The Fedw Lwyd brothers, Gerald and Gethin, carried the ball aggressively into contact. Scrum half, Brenig, distributed the ball magnificently under pressure and Dafydd Drewgoed punched holes in the Denbigh defence. The big Denbigh forwards began to tire and Bala started to take control of the scrums. Half way through the second half, Bala forwards pressure was rewarded with a try for Gethin Fedw Lwyd off the back of a rolling maul.
The rest of the game was a wrestling match between the two tired packs and the game finished 14 – 5 to Denbigh.
