Ruthin 43 v Mold 29
Following report kindly supplied by Ruthin RFC
In their first defence of the North Wales Cup Ruthin had work hard to come away with a win against a competent and spirited Mold side.
The visitors were straight into the Blues 22 with effective driving mauls which the home side managed to defend but conceded a penalty goal which Jack Martin kicked.
The visitors kept up the pressure until Ruthin broke from defence and flanker Ben Taylor went over for a try which fly half Callum Bennett converted. Within a few minutes Ruthin scored another try when, from a Blues lineout inside Mold’s 22, centres Harry Morgan and Gethin Hughes combined for Hughes to go over the whitewash with Bennett converting.
The Blues kept up the pressure and from a Ruthin turnover, orchestrated by captain Chris Davies, scrum half Will Mitchelmore offloaded to Morgan for the Blues 3rd try.
At 19-3 ahead one might have expected the Mold heads to go down but the opposite was the case and they launched themselves back into the home sides 22 and drove over for a try which Martin converted.
Ruthin then had to defend desperately to prevent Mold’s forwards driving over again. Eventually they cleared their lines and there was no further score before half time.
After the break Ruthin widened the gap again with a converted try from Hughes but the Blues could not draw away from a dogged Mold side. The home side went down to 14 men with a sin bin and the visitors put on another 12 points with 2 tries, one converted, narrowing the gap to 26-22 to Ruthin.
The Blues had to up their game to secure a win and Morgan forced his way across the try line again for another converted try but again the visitors came back with a converted try.
At 33-29 to Ruthin with 10 minutes to go the game could have gone either way but after a lineout on Mold’s 22 the ball was swung across field to wing Josh Wilson to go over for a try and then in the last minutes of the game some good phase play by the Blues fed Wilson again for his second try and the whistle blew for full time with the score 43-29 to Ruthin.
Rhyl Seconds 9 v Abergele Seconds 45
Following report kindly supplied by Rhyl RFC.
Despite turning round at half time only 14-6 adrift, some weak defensive tackling let Gele through in the second half to win this North Wales Cup match.
Rhyl mostly had the edge at the set pieces with props Marc Torr and Brendon Thomas allowing captain Damion Jones to win some useful scrum ball. Mike Potter and Mark Benton had the beating in the line outs of their taller opponents but Gele were more competitive at the breakdown and despite the efforts of number 8 Jamie Adam and flankers Mark Benton and Harry Jackson, Gele were there in greater numbers.
There was a welcome return to rugby for Geezer Davies in the second half with Keith Gains also making an appearance.
Stand off Wez Hancock varied his play, using both centres nartin Collin and Si Roberts and there was the chance for Daniel Dalton and Liam Duffy on the wings to run. Greg Profitt was awesome in defence, putting in some last man tackles to deny Gele further scores.
Scrum half Keith Jones had to leave the field after taking a knock to the head and captain Damion Jones also suffered injury.
Rhyl 20 v Colwyn Bay 35
Following match report kindly supplied by Rhyl RFC.
The final score didn't do justice to a close fought game. In an even first quarter, both sides defended well with neither side scoring.
The Bay opened the scoring in the second quarter with an early penalty to signal a period when it was all the Bay.
Rhyl’s cause was not helped by some ill-discipline and yet another yellow card for captain Dale Blackmore. In this period Rhyl gifted the Bay 3 tries by making simple mistakes, bad decisions and too much kicking possession away.
After some stern words at half time Rhyl came out with all guns blazing and began to believe in themselves.
Within 5 minutes full back Rob Bingham scored an excellent try and 5 minutes later Dale Blackmore made up for his yellow card by powering over from close out for a try.
The Bay responded with a converted try , but Rhyl replied with another crash ball try from Blackmore closely followed by a great backs move ending in Stuey Fellcrook scoring wide out on the wing. This stirred a panicking Bay into scoring another try off another Rhyl mistake then a late penalty secured their win.
Rhyl are improving week by week but need to cut out the mistakes which are gifting the opposition points but overall coach Phil Blakemore was pleased with another great performance. Man of the Match was easily Jamie Farrell, who put in 80 minutes of pure graft in every area of the game.
Rhyl Youth 7 v Nelson Youth 17
Rhyl’s young side put on a brave performance in the WRU Youth Bowl match but with only a try from Reeve Wright scoring Rhyl’s try, converted by Tyler Prime a strong Nelson side made the most of their chances to claim victory.

Dyma’r ail Sadwrn yn olynol i’r ddau dîm cyfagos gyfarfod – yn y plât y tro hwn! Chwaraeoedd Nant yn glinigol yn yr 20 munud cyntaf gan sgorio pedwar cais wedi’u rhannu rhwng yr ail reng, Sam, cefnwr, Grant, blaenasgellwr, Robin a’r canolwr, Aeron. Troswyd un o’r ceisiau gan Delwyn. Naill ai bu i Nant deimlo fod y gêm yn rhy rwydd neu daeth Bro i fwy i mewn iddi gan fod yr ornest yn llawer mwy cyfartal am weddill yr hanner heb ychwaneg o sgorio. 22 – 0 ar yr hanner felly!
Cafodd Bro gais haeddiannol wedi 15 munud o’r ail hanner trwy’r blaenwr, Dylan a droswyd gan y maswr, Mathew. Chwarter awr oedd yn weddill pan benderfynodd Nant godi’u gêm unwaith eto. Sgoriodd Aeron ei ail gais o’r prynhawn a throswyd y cais hwnnw gan Sion, y maswr. Cryfder Delwyn, y canolwr a olygodd sgorio’r chweched cais a chododd i fyny i ychwanegu’r ddeubwynt. Roedd Nant yn rheoli’r gêm yn llwyr erbyn hyn a bu i’r asgellwr ifanc, Steffan sgorio’i gais cyntaf i’r tîm cyntaf cyn i’r eilydd o asgellwr, Sion orffen y sgorio wedi 42 munud i roi sgôr terfynol o 46 -7. Ennill yn dda ond pob clod i Bro am roi cyfrif da ohonynt eu hunain am bron i hanner y gêm! Bydd Nant Conwy’n dychwelyd i gemau Cynghrair y Sadwrn nesaf gyda gêm galed i ffwrdd ym Mhwllheli ar ddechrau Tachwedd.
This was the second meeting of the neighbouring teams on successive Saturdays – in the Plate competition this time! Nant played in a clinical manner during the opening 20 minutes when scoring four tries shared between the lock, Sam; full back, Grant; flanker, Robin and centre, Aeron. Delwyn converted one of those tries.
Either Nant thought that this match was too easy or Bro decided to really show their mettle as the remainder of the 1st half was much more even with no extra scores on the scoreboard.
Bro scored a deserved try after 15 minutes of the 2nd half through forward, Dylan which was converted by fly half, Mathew. Only a quarter of an hour was left when Nant decided to raise the stakes once more.
Aeron scored his second try of the afternoon which was converted by fly half, Sion. Centre Delwyn’s strength was evident when he scored nant’s sixth try and he brushed himself down to make it a seven pointer. Nant were in full control again by now and young winger, Steffan scored his first try for Nant before replacement winger, Sion completed the scoring after 42 minutes.
A good win but credit must be given to Bro for their tenacity and good play for a large part of the match.
Nant Conwy will return to League action next Saturday with a stiff test away at Pwllheli at the start of November.
Denbigh 5 v Dolgellau 29
Following report kindly supplied by Denbigh RFC.
Despite giving a committed performance, a patched up Dinbych side missing most of it's first choice strike runners, failed to halt Dolgellau’s progress into the Third Round of the SWALEC Plate competition.
Nevertheless there were many positives to come out of the match for Dinbych with Harrison Jones giving an assured performance at outside half in his first senior team outing, whilst replacement wing Gareth Howatson looked a dangerous runner on his debut.
Dinbych did well to hold their own in the first quarter but eventually fell behind in the twenty fifth minute when they failed to clear a long kick downfield by the visitors resulting in a scrum five metres from the home line. The visitors used their bulkier pack to drive over and No 8 Dylan Llywellyn to claim the touchdown for a try converted with an excellent kick from wide out by outside half Gerwyn Thomas.
Dinbych responded well with second row Max Sharples prominent in some forceful driving mauls by the forwards taking play into Dolgellau territory but the visitors went further ahead just before the interval from another short range scrum near the right corner which the backs exploited with centre Gareth Hughes breaking through in midfield for a try again converted by Gerwyn Thomas.
Leading by fourteen points to nil at the interval the visitors were gifted their third try when Dinbych failed to secure the restart kick and compounded this by deciding not to contest the resulting driving maul from the short range line out which allowed second row Berwyn Hughes to dive over for an unconverted try.
Dinbych were still competitive round the field with full back Dan O’Sullivan initiating counterattacks but they fell further behind when good handling by Dolgellau’s midfield backs gave left wing Rob Pugh the opportunity to beat several defenders in restricted space to score an unconverted try in the corner.
Dinbych eventually gained some reward for their efforts and some sustained attacking play when second row Namer El Lamie forced his way over from short range for an unconverted try.
Dolgellau added their final try in the closing minutes when they launched a blind side attack from a scrum thirty metres out for replacement wing Llion Lloyd to outflank the covering defence and go over in the corner for an unconverted try.
Next Saturday Dinbych Firsts and Seconds are back in league action as they travel to Caernarfon.
Llandudno 17 v Bethesda 19
Following report kindly supplied by Llandudno RFC
LLANDUDNO LOSE IN A THRILLING CLIMAX ENCOUNTER.
With a strong wind in their favour the visitors failed to put any points on the board during the first half of play, and it looked as if Llan could capitalise on this in the second half.
It was however the visitors who opened the second half scoring, when from within the home side twenty two area, that the pack drove towards the try line, and when the ball was released, their winger Dylan Williams ran in for a touch down, with Aaron Roberts converting for another two points.
Llan were struggling to find form, and were being outplayed in the set pieces by a heavier pack, and it was from a similar set piece of play, that winger Dylan Williams crossed for his second try of the match.
Llan now began to put their game together taking play in the visitors half, and were rewarded with a penalty, which was taken by Luke Jones who failed to convert with the ball striking the goal posts.
Llan now started to gain control and ground, putting pressure onto the visitors defence, and it was centre Dave Davies that broke through the defence for a try, with Luke Jones converting.
Llan continued to push for more points, and were awarded a kickable penalty, but opted to go for maximum points by kicking into touch to gain a lineout, however they failed to convert this into points, due to a strong defence.
Llan kept up the pressure, and from a maul near the visitors try line, that hooker Nick Earlam broke away unopposed, touching under the posts, giving Luke Jones an easy conversion increasing their lead by fourteen points to twelve.
This was further increased to seventeen, when Luke Jones converted yet another penalty.
With only seven minutes, it looked as if they had secured a home win, and all that they needed to do was just keep control of the ball, but they failed to collect the ball from the restart, which allowed the visitors to put them on the back foot, and in the final two minutes of play, their pack who were dominant throughout, to take play with a driving maul towards the try line.
Llan tried to contain them, but in doing so according to the referee, illegally, resulting in a penalty try being awarded under the posts, with Aaron Roberts converting, gaining the two match winning points.

Llandrindod Wells 51 v Cwmcarn United 20
Following report kindly supplied by Llandrindod RFC.
SWALEC Bowl Competition- Round 2
The scoreline in this substantial win for Llandrindod flatters both sides, as the game was a bit like the curate's egg. Good in some parts, horrible in others. The reason for Llandrindod leaking two tries, Cymcarn's first tries this season, was the same reason as that for at least three of Llandrindod's nine tries, simple handling errors. Anyway, regardless, Llandrindod now progress to the third round of this competition.
Llandrindod put themselves under pressure from the first whistle. Pinned in to their own half by some slow play, they conceded two quick penalties, kicked by James Baker, before they awoke to the problem they were setting themselves and started to play properly resulting in a driving maul that made substantial metres before releasing the ball the Dan Oakley who powered his way though the Cwmcarn defence, passing to wing Tyler Evans to touch down in the corner for an unconverted try.
Less than a couple of minutes later, this was followed by skipper Geraint Evans with an unconverted try from a Cwmcarn handling error.
With both sides giving away too many penalties, the game took on a stop-start feel and it was from one of the Cwmcarn penalties that Dan Oakley gathered the ball just in side the Cwmcarn half, and sprinted 40 metres through the defence to score under the posts, conversion by Jonathan Duggan.
Llandrindod's final try in this half was one by the full back Bon Williams to give Llandrindod a 22-6 lead at the break.
The second half opened with a try for Cwmcarn's Rueban Hoard, conversion by Baker, after a Llandrindod fumble. With only a nine point lead and with Cwmcarn competing well, Llandrindod were still not certain of a win but their hopes for this were improved with a Jason Pritchard try from a kick ahead and gather, Duggan converting.
Like a rubber ball, Cwmcarn returned the compliment when Jeremy Parsons intercepted a loose pass and touched down, the reliable Baker converting. 29-20. After that it was really all Llandrindod. Tries by Aled Price, Geraint Evans, a self-converted try from Stephen Boore and a try from Jamie Price wrapped up proceedings.
Llandrindod now get back to normality this Saturday when the host Ferndale in the League and await news of their opposition in the next round of the Cup.
