Llandudno 20 v Mold 18
It was Llandudno who started the stronger but could not break through a stubborn Mold defence. Mid-way through the first half Mold built and attack in the Llandudno half and the referee awarded them a penalty for their efforts, which they converted to go 3 up.
From the re-start Llandudno were caught napping and Mold snatched a try to take them 8-0 ahead after 30 mins. But this seemed to spark Llandudno into life as they raised their game putting Mold under pressure and were also rewarded with a penalty which the Llandudno no9 Tommy Hocknell knocked over to make it 8-3 at half time but with Llandudno playing with the breeze in the second half.
The second half started with the teams exchanging tries, the Llandudno first try scored by centre Ed Weston, which was then followed by a fine try from wing Hugh Griffiths after and excellent passing move by the Llandudno back line, which Hocknell converted to make the score 20-18. Mold failed to convert either of their tries.
Mold missed a late penalty chance to give Llandudno two wins in a week over them.
Man of the match was scrum half Tommy Hocknell.

Dolgellau 22 v Ruthin 8
Having lost away to Dolgellau in the last two seasons Ruthin were looking to redress the situation in this Swalec Plate encounter on Saturday.
However it was not to be and the home side came away with a 22-8 win after a scrappy game with mistakes made on both sides.
Dolgellau missed two penalty goal kicks before full back Shay Owen kicked a penalty goal for the Blues from the half way line rather against the run of play.
The penalties kept coming on both sides and Dolgellau went down to 14 men when one of their wingers was sin-binned.
The Blues could not capitalise on the extra man and in fact it was the home side that went ahead from a converted pushover try from a scrum on Ruthin’s 22.
The Blues responded and played their best rugby up to half time but couldn’t break through a dogged Dolgellau defence despite having a try disallowed because the referee was unsighted.
The home side came out after the break 7-3 ahead and went further ahead with a penalty goal.
Again The Blues tried to break through but to no avail and lost a man to a yellow card Dolgellau took advantage and kicked across field for the ball to be collected by the winger who ran upfield and scored.
The teams were evened up when the home side got a second yellow card.
But the Blues were still conceding penalties and after the third in quick succession Dolgellau drove over from the resulting lineout 5yds out for a converted try.
The Blues got a consolation try when centre Harri Morgan forced his way along the wing in a good solo effort but it was all too late and the whistle blew with no further score.
With over 20 penalties conceded between the two sides this was a game which Ruthin at least would prefer to forget.

Bron yn syth o’r ail gychwyn, bu i gefnwyr Nant dorri’n rhydd a rhedodd y rhif 10, Sion o’I hanner ei hun i sgorio cais ger yr asgell. Hon oedd gêm gyntaf Sion y tymor hwn wedi iddo dderbyn anaf drwg i’w goes tros yr haf. Ond yn ôl ddaeth Bala a bu i Elgan, yr asgellwr sgorio’u cais cyntaf. Gwelwyd gweddill y gêm gyda’r Bala yn rhedeg y bêl o bob cyfeiriad a’r ymwelwyr yn cadw’r bêl ymysg y blaenwyr gan chwarae’r amser a oedd yn weddill i lawr. Ymhen pythefnos, bydd y ddwy ochr yn cyfarfod unwaith yn rhagor yn y Bala – yn y gynghrair y tro hwnnw ac rwy’n siwr na fydd canlyniad heddiw yn golygu dim ganol Hydref!
*
Regular scoring occurred throughout this match with the home team hanging on throughout to the visitors’ tail!
Only 2 minutes had elapsed when the Nant pack rumbled by the try line and Lock, Carwyn Rob. extended his long body and arms to touch down for the first score. Rhydian showed his place kicking prowess after 10 minutes when he reduced the lead with a penalty goal. Three minutes later, it was the turn of the hooker, Eryl to again show his try snatching ability with another touch down following a strong maul.
A quarter of the way through the match and Rhydian reduced the arrears again with another penalty. Almost immediately from the re-start, the Nant backs this time broke from their own half and No. 10, Sion, playing in his first match of the season after a leg injury sustained during the close season, out ran the defence to touch down in the corner.
But Bala did not let the visitors build up a lead and winger Elgan reduced the arrears again after 29 minutes with a try. Three minutes later, and the Nant pack rumbled upfield and Carwyn Rob. was on hand to score his second try of the day. Back came Bala (and Rhydian) again with another penalty after 35 minutes to give a half time score of 14- 20.
Rhydian again further reduced the arrears at the beginning of the 2nd half when a drop goal of his sailed to split the posts. But then the ‘turning point’ of the match probably arrived.
A Nant pack rumble was stopped on the line when a forward was deemed to ‘knock on’. One of the home forwards poked fun at the Nant player and slapped his back to ‘thank’ him for not scoring. The Referee saw and heard all this and reversed his decision to a penalty for Nant Conwy. Nant decided to take a set scrum and from this play, Robin Glyn, tight head prop, raced over to touch down by the posts to score a try that was converted by winger, Gwion.
This silliness turned out to be an expensive one for Bala! Only 7 minutes remained when Ilan broke the visiting defence to touch down by the posts - a try that was converted by Rhydian. The rest of the match was an exhibition of Bala passing the ball amongst the backs at all occasions and Nant Conwy playing tightly amongst the forwards. The Nant ‘method’ proved successful on the day as there was no further scoring and a win for the visitors by 24 – 27.
The two teams will repeat the match in Division 1 North in a fortnight’s time and all present today will, I’m sure, regard that match as a totally different game with today’s result having no bearing whatsoever on the result in October!

Bala 2nds 50 v Rhyl 2nds 0
After a drunken promise in the pub last weekend, rugby virgin, Aaron Duffy, turned up to Maes Gwyniad expecting to get five minutes off the bench in his first ever game of rugby. However, Rhyl only brought 13 players with them and, after Bala lent them all their subs, Aaron was forced play a full game for Bala. The forwards took Aaron to one side for five minutes before the game to give him a crash course in the black art of scrummaging, line out jumping and the laws of the game.
After a scrappy opening ten minutes, Bala began to assert their authority as their forwards took control of the breakdown and fly half, John Emrys, linked well with the other backs. Following several minutes of sustained pressure in the Rhyl half, Iolo Defaidty crashed through the centre for Bala’s first score of the day.
Five minutes later, debutant Aaron Duffy picked up a loose ball from a ruck and bulldozed his way over the Rhyl line for his first try in his first ever game of rugby.
Next it was John Emrys’ turn to score as he weaved like a grass snake through the Rhyl defence to touch down under the posts. Two more tries from outside centre, Gwion Jones, and winger, Steffan Morris, put Bala 31-0 up at the half time interval.
Rhyl made it clear though that they hadn’t come to loose and fought back hard in the opening quarter of the second half. Their 60 year old prop wrestled like a bear all day with the Bala front row, forcing Ynyr Tyn Coed to come off with a slipped disk and bending replacement prop Robin Cablyd into some unusual positions. Their veteran scrum half was also lively and even showed Bala legend Euros Jones a clean pair of heels.
Bala found their rhythm again as Brenig, who replaced John Emrys at fly half, made several dangerous breaks deep into the Rhyl half. Aaron Duffy popped up again to snatch a try half way through the second half. The flood gates had opened and players were now queuing up to score. Gethin Fedw Lwyd got one of his trademark push over tries off the back of a driving maul and Aaron Duffy bagged one more for his hat trick before the referee put Rhyl out of their misery with the final whistle.
