Ar brynhawn gwyntag gydag ychydig o lethr arno, roedd hon yn fuddugoliaeth haeddiannol i Sgiwen serch fod y sgôr yn annheg braidd.Bu i’r tîm acrtref gicio’n barhaus gyda’r gwynt i’r gornel isaf ac wedi 24 munud, pan giciwyd cic gosb am linnell, bu i’r rhif 8 hyrddio trosodd am gais. Amddifynnodd nant yn gadarn am weddill yr hanner gan fod yn reit falch o gadw’r sgôr o fewn cyrraedd rhesymol pan aeth y chwiban am yr egwyl.
Bu raid i Nant chwarae gydag 14 dyn am 20 munud ar ddechrau’r ail hanner pan ddyfarnwyd dau gerdyn melyn yn dilyn ei gilydd iddynt. Parhawyd i amddiffyn yn gadarn cyn i rif 4 y gwrthwynebwyr lwyddo i ymestyn i gyrraedd y gwyngalch wedi 16 munud – cais a droswyd gan y rhif 10. Deng munud oedd yn weddill pan ddyfarnwyd cais cosb i’r tîm cartref heb unrhyw eglurhâd amlwg. Troswyd y cais hwn ac nid oedd yn syndod wir fod pedwerydd cais Sgiwen yn cyrraedd ar 44 munud gan frawd un o bropiau presennol Cymru. Ymdrech lew yn erbyn tîm hynod o gryf a oedd, yn ôl yr hyfforddwyr, wedi ymarfer a dysgu o ymweliad Pwllheli a’r maes yn y rownd flaenorol. Dymunir y gorau bosibl i Sgiwen yn y rownd nesaf.
Dychwelir i gêm Gynghrair y Gogledd ar Sadwrn cyntaf brill pan groesweir Yr Wyddgrug i Bant Carw gyda’r gic gyntaf am 2.30 o’r gloch.
On a windy afternoon on a slightly sloping pitch, this was a deserved victory for Skewen although the final score did not reflect the capabilities of both teams. On another day, who knows? The homesters used the wind to kick down towards the bottom cornet continuously throughout the first half.
The first try came after 24 minutes when, following a penalty, a line out on the 5 metre line was gathered and their no. 8 managed to touch down for the try. Nant defended gallantly for the rest of the half and were upbeat at half time with the score being 5 – 0 only.
Things changed quickly immediately after half time when two Nant forwards received consecutive yellow cards. Playing 20 minutes of the match with 14 men took its toll on the visitors and they concede d the 2nd try after 16 minutes when the lock stretched his arm to touch the ball down on the whitewash. This try was converted by the no. 10.
Only ten minutes remained when Skewen were awarded a ‘penalty try’ where even the home supporters even were unsure why!. This try was converted and it was no surprise that Skewen further extended their lead after 44 minutes play when the brother of one of the present Wales props scored the final try.
A grand effort by Nant Conwy against a really strong all round team who, according to their Coaches had learnt from, and trained accordingly, after the visit of Pwllheli in the previous round. All at Nant Conwy wish Skewen all the best in the next round.
League action will return on the first Saturday of April when Mold will be the visitors to Pant Carw with the kick off at 2.30 p.m.

Caernarfon 21 v 10 Dolgellau
Following report kindly supplied by Dolgellau RFC.
Fourteen man Dolgellau put up a brave fight against a well organised Caernarfon side, and with 15 minutes remaining held an unlikely 10-7 lead, but Caernarfon’s strength and man advantage, and superbly marshalled by veteran stand-off, Kelvin Morris, saw them score twice in the closing stages to secure the points.
Caernarfon were on top early in the first half and Dolgellau full-back, Dion Jones and scrum half, Owain Thomas had to make try saving tackles. However after 20 minutes Caernarfon went ahead, working down the left hand side to release wing Dylan Gwyn to score in the corner. Stand-off, Kelvin Morris put over a difficult conversion to make it 7-0.
Dolgellau responded and should have scored when prop Greg Smithies was held up on the line. However on 35 minutes, they were dealt a cruel blow, when no.8 Dylan Llewelyn was red carded for an off-the ball incident that also saw Caernarfon receiving a yellow card. This did not deter Dolgellau and they reduced the arrears with a penalty to stand-off Gerwyn Thomas on the stroke of half time, and make it 7-3 in favour of Caernarfon.
Dolgellau had to bring on Jac Roberts in place of injured centre Carwyn Pugh, but they continued to defend well and looked dangerous themselves through the probing runs of wing Gareth Hughes. On 15 minutes Dolgellau took an unlikely lead, as skipper Gerwyn Thomas took a quick lineout and found the home defence off guard, flanker Rob Lewis and 2nd row Carwyn Hughes set up prop Huw Jones to surge over under the posts. Thomas added the conversion to take Dolgellau ahead 7-10.
However, despite a heroic defence at times, Caernarfon were asking questions continually, but the visitors held on until with 14 minutes remaining , a Caernarfon catch and drive from a lineout saw flanker Andrew Williams surge over for the inevitable score. Morris converted to put them 14-10 ahead.
It was all Caernarfon now, and their third try came with 5 minutes remaining. The instrumental Morris missing out his centres to find no.8 Rhys Evans break through the most narrow of gaps in the visiting defence to score a memorable try. Again Morris was accurate with the conversion and sealed a solid home victory by 21-10.
Dolgellau can take heart also from another confident display against the odds stacked against them during the second half. They now face COBRA on the Marian on Saturday, hoping that a victory will be a major step to safety, whilst Caernarfon move up above Bethesda in joint 5th position and level on points with 4rth placed Mold.
Ruthin 5 v Bala 37
Following report kindly supplied by Ruthin RFC.
With only one point between the teams in the table this home match against Bala looked on paper as though it should be a close match but it was not to be and Bala came away from Caeddol with a 37-5 bonus point win allowing them to jump to 3rd in the table with Ruthin remaining 7th.
For the first ten minutes play was pretty evenly matched.
The Blues had the first opportunity to score with a drive over the Bala line but was the ball was judged to be held up and Ruthin could not take advantage of the 5m scrum and play switched to their own half.
Bala were awarded a penalty and from the resulting lineout on Ruthin’s 22 drove over the Blues line and were awarded a penalty try converted by Rhydian Jones.
Play continued to move between the two 22 yard lines and towards the end of the first half strong running from the visitors led to their second try and the whistle blew with Bala 12-0 up.
Following the break Bala continued to attack and although there was some good tackling from the Blues the pressure eventually told. After kicking a penalty goal the visitors went into a ‘purple patch’ of try scoring in a period of 20 minutes with four tries two of which were converted with Elan Rowlands and Rhydian Jones getting the points.
With 10 minutes to go a battered home team managed to raise their game and wing Josh Wilson ran through for the Blues only try.
However it was all too late for the Blues and Bala came away with a convincing and well- deserved win. Ruthin Youth and second team were also playing Bala and fared better – both winning their matches.
Ruthin 2nds 17 v Bala 2nds 5
Following report kindly supplied by Bala RFC.
Injury ravaged Bala seconds struggled to get a side together this weekend and Team Manager, Harry Guttridge, spent Saturday morning ringing around all the elderly former players trying to coax them out of retirement. Rhydian ‘Mwnc’ Morris, Dyl Ginge, Kyle Jones and Sam Edwards answered Bala’s call and a motley crew of 16 players made the journey to Ruthin.
Dyl Ginge arrived just before kick off after running a long distance fell race in the morning and rugby league Dee Valley Dragons captain, Kyle Jones, hadn’t played rugby union since he was at Ysgol y Berwyn!
The game started very evenly until the first scrum, when the gigantic Ruthin props trampled over the Bala pack. Ruthin would go on to dominate every scrum and starve Bala of possession. The swirling wind also disrupted the Bala line out and the Ruthin jumpers were up quickly to beat Bala to the ball.
Ruthin scored the first try after 15 minutes, when their powerful scrum created the room for their slippery scrum half to jinx under the posts.
It was a frustrating day for the Bala back line because Ruthin’s dominance in the set pice rarely gave them the opportunity to run with the ball. Outside centre Steffan Morris punched holes in the Ruthin defence on the few occasions that the ball go to him and winger John Emrys channelled his frustration into putting in big hits on his opposite number.
Another powerful scrum just inside the Bala 22 yard line provided the platform for Ruthin’s second try, which was finished off with slick hands along the line. The half time score was 10 nil to Ruthin.
Little changed in the second half and Ruthin went on to score one more try off the back of a five metre scrum. Bala were dangerous when they got their hands on the ball but they would loose it again in the set piece.
Bala were to salvage a consolation try in the last play of the game when pick and drives from Captain Neil Penlan, Kyle Jones and Dewi Pugh allowed Iwan Twin to crash over the line.
The game finished 17-5 to Ruthn. Bala entertain Caernarfon at home next weekend.
