Ruthin 22 v Caernarfon 18
Following report kindly supplied by Ruthin RFC.
Before kick off the 120 players plus coaches and officials from the Caernarfon, Flint and Rhuthun youth, 2nds and 1st teams playing at Cae Ddol lined up for a minutes silence in memory of Mikey Jones, youth prop, who tragically died with two of his friends in a car accident last month.
In a close match, reflecting that only one point separated the Rhuthun and Caernarfon 1st teams in the league, the result was in doubt right up to the final whistle.
Caernarfon were first with points on the board with a penalty goal from Aled Jones after 5 minutes play and then missed the opportunity to further ahead with another penalty goal attempt shortly afterwards. From the restart Rhuthun went on the offensive and within the space of 10 or so minutes scored three tries, 2 from centre Nathan Jones which he converted and 1 from scrum half Cai Edwards.
The visitors responded and after a period of pressure Mark Jones went over the Rhuthun whitewash with Aled converting. The Blues missed the opportunity to widen the gap again with a penalty goal attempt and after 40 minutes play the home side was 19-10 up. Throughout the second half Rhuthun had to defend against well organised and effective Caernarfon attacking play.
5 minutes into the half Aled kicked another penalty goal. The score remained at 19-13 for the next 20 minutes with the Blues being denied possession and unable to effectively break out of defence for much of the time.
The visitors went down to 14 men with a yellow card giving some relief to the home side and Nathan kicked a penalty goal.
However the visitors weren’t finished and 2 minutes from full time Sion Wyn Roberts scored a try with the conversion hitting the upright.
At 22-18 the home side spent a desperate few minutes in defence until they were awarded a penalty and the ball was kicked into touch and the whistle blew for full time.

This was a match played in excellent spirit although there were several penalties awarded to both sides for technical offences. There was no sign of any card being shown at any time in the match. Nant opened the scoring through a prepared move from a 5 metre lineout. Tom Oliver (Hooker) diving over in the left hand corner. Steffan Horan (no 13) added an excellent two points from the touchline.
Nant went further ahead through a deserved try by Prop, Robin Parry who was starting his first match of the season. Bethesda responded immediately when Ryan Nunes scored the first of his two tries for the day – both being converted by no 10, Gerwyn Thomas. But back came nant when flanker, Gareth Davies scored an opportunistic try to plunge over with Steffan Horan adding the two points.
Two minutes later scored their forth try (bonus point) through their dependale no 8, Carwyn Ellis with Steffan Horan again adding the extras. But, this was not the end of the scoring in the first half as Ryan nunes and Gerwyn Thomas repeated their scoring feats a few minutes before to give a half time score of 26 – 14.
Nant went further ahead at the start of the 2nd Half when left winger Jack Moriarty sprinted over for a try. From this point on, Bethesda came into the game more and more and it was no surprise when Hokker, Dafid Wyn scored the visitors’ thirs try after 64 minutes. This was the last try of the match as Bethesda decided to go for a ‘losing bonus point’ in deciding to attempt at goal with penalty kicks. Gerwyn Thomas was successful on two occasions to give a final score of 31 – 25.

Menai Bridge 42 v Mold 2nds 19 - match report
Following report kindly supplied by Menai Bridge RFC.
Bridge took an early lead in this match and never looked back. A dominant scrum allowed 8 Chris Roberts to claim the opening try for the home side. Bridge piled on the pressure and quick attacking ball led to a midfield try for Dan Hughes. Mold then enjoyed a period of pressure in the Bridge 22 and from a driving maul their second row Gareth Milington crashed over for a converted try. With the score at 10 to 7 Mold were back in the game despite the home teams best efforts.
Bridge extended their lead with a great move off the back of an attacking srum. Number 8 Roberts and scrum half Ed Williams combined to outpace the Mold defence for Williams's try. A penalty from McGrath closed the half at 18-7 .
The bonus point try for Bridge came quickly in the second half, winger Logan Jones getting over tight to the touchline. Dan Hughes then got his second, carrying over three defenders for the score.
With Bridge looking to extend their lead a careless mixup in midfield was pounced on by the lively Jack RogerWalters for a Mold try. With the Bridge scrum going well Chris Roberts claimed his second try off the back of an advancing 5metre scrum. Bridge then took their score to 42 points when Logan Jones topped off some great handling along the back line. Mold closed the game with a final try, which was just rewards for their hard work, scored by Ronnie O'Hagan.
Bro Ffestiniog 7 v Llandudno 20 - match report
Following report kindly supplied by Llandudno RFC.
The Quarrymen failed stop a second half burst of points by the Goats herd, and they remain top of Division One North having won all eight of their matches of the season.
It was the Quarrymen who took the lead just on the halfway mark, scoring their only points of the match with a converted try. The Goats during this first half failed to settle as a herd, with the forwards not being able to provide possession for their back division to use at pace.
The second period of play saw the forwards now securing more ball from line out and set peace, and this told on the home defence on the forty eight minute mark they were awarded a penalty which was converted by Oscar Lennon giving them their first points of
a second half scoring spree.
The match was very much a physical battle in the forward exchanges with the Goats beginning to come out on top and provide the much needed ball to win this encounter. A telling break from just inside of their own half by Oscar Lennon spilt the home defensive, and it was his brother Arthur Lennon who was at hand to take the try scoring pass which his brother also converted after sixty minutes of play.
The forwards began to drive forward with ball in hand, and it was from such a drive that they took play just over the Bro twenty two line that the were awarded a penalty near the posts, giving Oscar Lennon any easy two point conversion on seventy minutes.
Bro failed to put the Goats try line under any threat due a strong defensive wall by the Goats, and it was on the seventy fifth minute that they secured this difficult away encounter, when from a telling burst from within their own half by forwards and backs that prop Lewis Jones crashed over the try line with Oscar Lennon completing the scoring with the conversion.
Next Saturday at home to Llangefni 2.30.KO.

Llangefni 37 v Pwllheli 51 - match report
Following report kindly supplied by Llangefni RFC.
The game was won and lost in the 1st 20 minutes as Cefni made the most sluggish of starts, and were simply not able to live with Pwll`s high tempo wide game early doors. It was 26-3 to the visitors after 20 minutes. However Cefni found the resilience, character and skill to win the last 60 minutes 34-27 !
Pwll`s 1st try was a statement of intent: when a Cefni attack broke down on their 10 metre line, the ball was whipped into midfield and 2 passes later , ex RGC stalwart Carwyn ap Myrddin raced in at the corner, 0-5. The 1st scrum of the game near half way, saw Cefni shunted backwards. Pwll moved the ball right , then back into midfield where ap Myrddin found the space to scamper over near the posts. His extras made it 0-12. Another dominant Pwll scrum and a no 8 drive saw Deio Brunelli in space. He stepped the fullback for a try converted by ap Myrddin: 0-19 !
Cefni finally decided to change gear and some strong carries and interpassing led to a 3 pointer for Rhys Hughes, 3-19. From the long restart Cefni had time to clear upfield, but the ball was kept in hand. When the clearance kick was finally used, it did notfind touch. Pwll`s left wing, Robin Hughes Jones, stood up his opposite number and sped down the outside channel to score the bonus point try, ap Myrddin`s extras stretched thePwll lead to 3-26.
Facing humiliation, Cefni started to impose their game. They penned Pwll in their 22 for several minutes. It seemed that Pwll`s defence would hold firm, until the Cefni pivot, Tom Owen, timed his pass to Greg Horsman to perfection. The latter`s pace and chosen angle meant try under the posts. Rhys Hughes made it 10-26. Cefni were now hitting their straps as debutant 2nd row, Dominic Owen, Ynnir Jones, Carrog Davies and others were breaking tackles and getting in behind the Pwll defence.
Cefni soon got their 2nd try after going through multiple phases and stretching Pwll on the right flank before switching left, where Greg Horsman fed Gethin Andrews who showed Pwll a clean pair of heels from 20 metres. Another Hughes kick and it was 17-26. Cefni needed to consolidate, but they botched the catch from the restart, allowing Pwll to attack into their 22. When Cefni were penalised, Pwll kicked to the corner and after a fine driving maul , hooker Kevin Morris got the touchdown. A fine conversion made it 17-33.
When Cefni regained possession, they used it well to stretch the Pwll defence. A deliberate knock on gave Cefni the penalty momentum, and a few phases later powerful Cefni 9, Aled Jones, was unstoppable from close range. No kick but 22-33 at the break.
Pwll got the next crucial score. It came afterCefni had driven a maul deep into the Pwll 22 only to have the ball ripped from their grasp. There followed a length of the field move , which ended with Gareth Williams racing over wide on the left. 22 -38. Cefni were tackling tenaciously and combative et the breakdown, and Rhys Hughes landed his 2nd penalty for 25-38. Cefni were looking dangerous but alleged crossing in midfield gave Pwll the chance to kick into the home 22. Their lineout drive was repelled, but they used their dominant scrum to allow their 9 the easiest of tries from the advancing scrum. 25-43.
Cefni responded with an excellent counter attacking try: when a Pwll attack broke down near the Cefni 10 metre line, Rhys Hughes made good ground up the touch line before feeding wing Gethin Andrews near the Pwll 10 metre line. There were 4 defenders around him , but he cut inside and out sprinted them to score under the posts: 32-43. Any hopes of an upset were soon dashed as Cefni fell foul of the ref`s whistle, allowing Pwll to set up camp in the home 22 and exploit their stronger scrum to add 2 further tries , for 32-53.
Cefni had the last word after a good break by Horsman, Dominic Owen took it on into the 22. After a few drives for the line the ball was moved left to prop Bedwyr Williams who forced his way over from close range. 37-51.
Not the win Cefni wanted, but there were many positives which suggest that first win is not so far away . Dominic Owen had an excellent debut in the 2nd row, showing up well in open play and stealing a few Pwll throws. Tom Owen showed up very well in his first game at no 10. Gethin Andrews confirmed that he can finish from all areas of the field if he is given the service.
Next week Cefni travel to Llandudno to play the table toppers .
