Newtown 24-6 Llangollen
Newtown secured a league and cup double with a comprehensive win over their nearest challengers in Division 3, running out 24-6 winners over Llangollen.
With a strong wind at their backs, it was the Clwyd side who began the game more brightly, with their pack doing good work in the loose and at set pieces, and took a 3-0 lead from a successful penalty kick after 11 minutes.
After a slow start from the Mid Wales side, they began to impress themselves upon the game, and after putting pressure on the Llangollen back line, they were able to turn the ball over in a strong position, which resulted in the first try of the day after 20 minutes, which put Newtown into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the game.
With the control of the game now firmly in the hands of Newtown, they were able to stretch their lead to 10-3 with a second try, which again went unconverted. Llangollen were able to bring themselves back within striking distance with another penalty shortly before half time, giving a half time scoreline of 10-6 in Newtown’s favour.
With the water bottles barely carried off the pitch after the interval, Newtown stretched their lead again with a third try, this time converted to give a 17-6 lead.
Despite the tireless efforts of the Llangollen pack, Newtown kept a stranglehold on the game, with another try coming on 52 minutes to put Newtown firmly in control at 24-6. Even after being reduced to 13 men for a spell, they were determined not to allow their line to be breached, and despite plenty of pressure from Llangollen, they held them at bay to secure a convincing 24-6 win and their second trophy of the season.
