Following report kindly supplied by Nant Conwy RFC.
Dyfarnwr / Referee: Mr Gareth Edwards, Abergele
This was a highly anticipated match between the current league division one north “titans” who have been fortunate enough to share the top spots in recent seasons and levels of expectation was high for sure.
Travelling west for an early kick off, the weather seemed to be closing in fast with low mist and drizzle. On arrival, there seemed to have been significant rainfall overnight and during the early morning, making for heavy conditions, which would surely favour the playing format of the much heavier Llyn pack.
From the kick off, it seemed Nant were a little over excited leading to an unforced error in the first 2 minutes and a penalty give away to the Llyn boys which was duly put to bed leaving Nant on the chase. Not to be outdone we saw Nant regroup resulting in a two man counter manoeuvre on the left wing to put Nant’s first scores on the doors at the 5 minute point.
The run of play went back and forth between attack/defence and it is fair to say that Nant’s defence was absolutely solid as Pwll tried to pressurise at every opportunity using their heavier forwards effectively.
It was difficult to see who, at times was on top, so well matched were the two teams leading to an exciting display of good solid rugby which was a credit to both clubs.
At the half way point it was Nant who were on the back foot with the score standing at 16/15; this was a game that was going to be too tight to call.
With the start of the 2nd half the quality of play was pretty much as it was in the first half with scores reflected the nip and tuck nature of the game.
The tension was palpable with the scores even at 21/21 and the count down to the final whistle commencing, Nant found themselves having to defend for their lives as the Llyn pack threw everything at them including the kitchen sink but the defence was rock solid
A kick to touch was on the cards down the left wing but fell short and sweetly into the capable hands of Jack who used his speed and guile to gain some much needed territory deep into the Pwll half and with the pressure on the other foot the Llyn pack conceded a penalty with literally a minute to go.
Although an extremely difficult angle and distance Nant chose to go for the posts and you could hear a pin drop as Arthur stepped up to the tee.
As the kick was taken some of the spectators simply couldn’t watch as it appeared to be drifting wide…. But lo and behold the ball grazed the far post and dropped between the uprights for a 3 point win.
The lads should be congratulated for giving their all as it was clear for all to see that they had left nothing in the changing room.
Congratulations to all boys for a well-deserved win
[One interesting note: Ifan (ex-Pwllheli player) scoring a try for Nant and Elgan (ex-Nant player) scoring a try for Pwllheli!]
On a separate note, everyone sends their sincere good wishes to Aeron for a speedy recovery following a horrendous injury last week. Get better soon buddy
Gêm hir-ddisgwyliedig oedd hon rhwng rhwng ‘cewri’ presennol Adran 1 y Gogledd sydd wedi bod digon ffodus I rannu’r safle ar ben y tabl dros y tymhorau diwethaf sc roedd edrych ymlaen mawr wedi bod am yr ornest yn Llŷn ag Eifionydd ac yn Nyffryn Conwy gyfan.
Wrth deithio i’r gorllewin am gic gyntaf gynnar, edrychai fel petae’r tywydd am droi allan yn ddiflas gyda niwl a glaw ysgafn.
Wedi cyrraedd, gwelwyd fod glaw pur drwm wedi bod tros nos a’r bore cynnar a wnaeth gyflwr y maes yn bur drwm [mantais i bac trwm bechgyn ‘pen draw’r byd’ hwyrach!]
O’r dechrau, ymddangosai nant fel petaent yn rhy frwdfrydig gan roi cyfle am gic gosb [a droswyd] i’r tîm cartref. Yn unionsyth, gwelwyd nant yn tynnu at ei gilydd a bu i gyflymder Jack a Sion ar yr asgell chwith olygu cais i’r cefnwr wedi 5 munud. Roedd y chwarae’n symud yn ôl ac ymlaen rhwng ymosod/amddiffyn a digon teg yw nodi fod amddiffyn Nant yn soled wrth i Bwllheli geisio rhoi pwysau ar bob cynnig trwy eu blaenwyr effeithiol.
Roedd yn anodd dewis pa dîm oedd gyda goruchafiaeth gan fod y ddwy ochr yn chwarae mor dda ac yn arddangos rygbi o safon uchel – chwarae canmoladwy gan y ddwy ochr!
Ar yr hanner, Nant oedd ar ei hôl hi 16 – 15 ond roedd hon yn gêm na allai neb ragweld y canlyniad.
Parhaoedd dechrau’r ail hanner yn yr un modd gyda’r sgorio’n arddangos nad oedd fawr o wahaniaeth rhwng y naill ochr na’r llall. Gellid teimlo’r tensiwn yn y dyrfa enfawr a oedd yn bresennol gyda’r sgôr yn gyfartal ar 21 – 21 â’r chwiban olaf yn agoshau. Roedd yn rhaid i Nant amddiffyn am eu bywydau wrth I Bwllheli fynd amdani go iawn ond amddiffyn yr ymwelwyr fel mur môr cadarn. Ceisiodd Pwllheli gic i’r ystlys ar y chwith a syrthiodd yn brin a wele Jack unwaith eto’n defnyddio’i gyflymder a’i sgiliau i ennill cryn dipyn o dir yn hanner Pwllheli. Y pwysau yn awr ar y tîm cartref a chyda 1 munud yn weddill, dyfarnwyd fod y pac cartref wedi camymddwyn mewn ryc. Er ymhell i ffwrdd o’r pyst ac ar ongl anodd syrthiodd y maes yn hollol ddistaw wrth i Arthur gamu at y ‘T’.
Rhyfedd oedd sylwi ar nifer o gefnogwyr nant yn troi’u wynebau draw fel yr ymddangosai’r gic fel pebae am hwylio i’r dde… ond, trodd at y pyst ar yr eiliad olaf a chrafu’r ochr fewnol i’r postyn pellaf gan roi buddugoliaeth o 3 phwynt i Nant Conwy.
Dylid llongyfarch y ddwy ochr gan ei bod yn amlwg wrth i’r 30+ o chwaraewyr ymlwybro tuag at yr ystafelloedd newid ar y diwedd i bob un roi y cyfan.
[Un nodyn difyr: Ifan (cyn chwarewr Pwllheli) yn sgorio cais tros Nant ac Elgan (cyn chwarewr Nant) yn sgorio cais tros Bwllheli].
Ar nodyn gwahanol, dymuna pawb sy’n ymwneud â Chlwb Rygbi Nant Conwy anfon eu dymuniadau gorau i Aeron [Creigiau] yn dilyn anaf hynod, hynod ddifrifol wrth gynrychioli ‘Teirw Nant’ y Sadwrn diwethaf. Gobeithio ‘Creigiau’ y bydd y llawdriniaeth enfawr yr wyt yn ei hwynebu’n y dyfodol agos yn mynd yn dda ac y byddi’n troi at wella’n fuan. Dyna’n dymuniad ni i gyd!
