North Wales Senior Cup
Llangefni 16 v Caernarfon 43
With Caernarfon having lost the weekend before to Bethesda, and Llangefni having beaten Bethesda the week before that, it was a game to play for; the Islanders an opportunity for a big scalp and Caernarfon to restore face. It was not to be for Llangefni though with Caernarfon winning 43 points to 16. The score was far from a reflection of the game however, with Llangefni at times showing the way and playing some very good rugby.
With referee Ieuan Williams, Flint in charge, the game kicked off with Llangefni kicking into deep field, with an excellent chase the ball was cleanly taken by the Cefni forwards and to the ground for a ruck which drew in the Cefni defences. Caernarfon were able to get turn over ball which they quickly passed out wide to their winger John Llwelyn who without challenge ran all the way, crossing the Cefni try line for the first try of the day, successfully converted by centre half Rhys Evans, 0-7 with less than five minutes of play.
The game continued with Llangefni coming back hard at the Cofi`s, and some 30 meters from the Caernarfon try line, in a ruck situation Caernarfon were penalised for going over the top, penalty to Llangefni taken by full back Iwan Davies, piercing the post, 3 – 7. Llangefni playing in the Caernarfon half of the field were awarded a scrum for a Cofi infringement, but collapsing in the mud, referee Mr. Williams called the scrum to a new location, Cefni put in but won by Caernarfon who were able to kick into deep Llangefni territory and line out, Llangefni put in. At the line out, Caernarfon won the ball quickly passing out to their wing John Llewelyn, who was able to run through the defences and cross over in the corner for his second try of the afternoon, successfully converted by centre half Rhys Evans, the score, 3 – 14.
Llangefni re started the game kicking up field and in a ruck situation referee finding Caernarfon off side, penalty awarded to Llangefni, again some 30 meters from the posts, with full back Iwan Davies adding to the score 6 – 14. There followed a period of intense play from Llangefni, with a penalty awarded to them some 20 meters from the Cofi try line, not going for the 3 points they kicked out for line out, but with the throw not straight, they lost momentum the ball was kicked clear by the Cofi`s into deep Cefni territory but failed to find the line out, Llangefni ran back with ball, but a knock on saw the pressure ease for Caernarfon, scrum awarded Cofi put in. Fed in by their scrum half the ball was cleanly taken and for a Cefni infringement, penalty awarded on the half way line to Caernarfon. With centre half Rhys Evans fancying his chances he kicked the ball with great accuracy, piercing the posts, the score 6 – 17.
Play continued and for a high tackle in the Caernarfon territory, flanker Llyr Holland received a yellow card from referee Mr. Williams, giving Cefni the opportunity to put another 3 on the score board, with full back Iwan Davies successfully kicking the penalty, 9 – 17. Having lost one man Caernarfon came back hard at Llangefni, giving little opportunity for the Islanders to take advantage, instead from the half way line, Caernarfon with possession and making inroads into the Cefni defences, the ball was again passed wide to the Cofi winger John Llewelyn who was able to charge up field, reaching the corner for his hat trick try, successfully converted by centre half Rhys Evans, 9 – 24, which was the score at the half.
Caernarfon kicked off the second half into safe Cefni hands who charge forward at Cernarfon who continued to be short of one man. Llangefni kicked up field to gain territory and a knock on by the Caernarfon player, scrum awarded to Llangefni. There followed a huge 35 meter drive by the Islanders pack, Caernarfon were found guilty of pulling the pack down on their 22 meter line, penalty to Llangefni, which they kicked out for line out, 5 meter line. Again the line out was not straight, Caernarfon were left off the hook and their 15th man allowed back on the field, scrum to Caernarfon. The ball was fed out and passed back to be cleared up field, but with the ball failing to be caught, it became loose ball which Llangefni flanker Declan Griffiths quickly landed, try to Llangefni, successfully converted by full back Iwan Davies, 16 – 24.
With Caernarfon shocked by the Cefni try, and with Llangefni players starting to feel the physical strain of the match it was Caernarfon who upped the tempo and roared away, scoring a further three tries from winger Dafydd Roberts, gaining the bonus point, John Llewelyn his fourth of the afternoon and outside centre Kelvin Morris, with just the two being converted by centre half Rhys Evans the score at the full time 16 – 43.
