There is little change at the top of Division One North after league leaders Caernarfon picked up maximum points with their 14-38 win at Mold. Wing Dylan Gwyn Owen crossed for two of his side's five tries, the others coming from centre Dafudd Roberts, scrum half Tristan Gwilym and centre Gareth Thirsk. Outside half Kelfyn Morris kicked five conversions and a penalty.
Nant Conwy moved in to third place with an 11-try crushing of visitors Colwyn Bay, full back Grant Jones crossing for three tries.
Second-placed Bethesda won 20-13 at Ruthin while Pwllheli picked up a losign point in their fight against relegation, going down 17-12 at Llangefni. Wing Carwyn Milburn kicked four penalties for the home side.
Nant Conwy 58 v Colwyn Bay 5 - Report kindly supplied by Nant RFC
The main peculiarity from this match was how the Bay’s much larger and stronger pack was forced back on their heels continuously. After 9 minutes play, the Nant pack pushed their opponents over the line from about 15 metres with Carwyn having touched down with Ifan converting. Although Nant’s pack was in complete control, the next score did not arrive until 30 minutes play had elapsed when Grant ran purposefully from his own half and outpaced the defence to score in the corner. Five minutes later, a very rapid passing movement along the left wing between Grant and Aeron saw Aeron touching down right by the corner flag. The first half whistle was about to be blown when Eryl reacted quickly to a ball won from the bay pack and raced over for a try which brought the bonus point to Nant and a score of 22 – 0.
Bay began the second half brighter and Bryn Williams barged over for a try before Nant had really ‘woken up’. But, the pattern of play soon reverted to be similar to that of the first half with Carwyn scoring a very similar try to his first one. Fifteen minutes play was left when Grant, caught a high kick by his own 22 metre line and managed to beat every attempt to tackle him to score an exceptional try. Three minutes later, Aeron showed his speed when he darted along the right touchline to score a try in that corner. Grant upped the scoring stakes again a minute later by rounding the entire defence again to touch down beneath the posts. Ifan converted this try. Only two minutes were left, when Euros used his strength to push his way between the two Centres to score a try. He got up and converted his own try! As in the first half, the final whistle was about to be blown, Ifan this time reacted quickly to another loose ball and darted over to touch down and score Nant’s tenth try of the match with Euros again converting to make a final score of 58 – 5.
