Newport Gwent Dragons Under 18 20 RGC 1404 Under 18 0
The RGc 1404 Under 18 side went into this match genuinely believing that they would record their first victory against the Dragons at this age-group in the regional age-grade competition. However a lacklustre first-half performance which saw them heavily penalised in both the scrum and contact areas saw them go into half-time 15 points to nil down. In spite of a difficult journey to Betwss RFC,it was the North Walian side who had started the brighter when centre Mike Jones broke clear within the first couple of minutes but they failed to capitalise on this early advantage and in truth rarely threatened the young Dragons line for the remainder of the half. On the other hand when the home side were in the RGC 1404 red zone they invariably came away with points, scoring two tries, one of which was converted, and a penalty.
With wind and rain being a persistent feature of the second half both sides relied on their forwards for the most part to pound out the hard yards, and with the North Wales front row of Callum Mitchell,Gareth Pym and Joe Simpson doing just that,so they began to spend extended periods of time in the opposition half. However a lack of composure close to the whitewash led to attacking opportunities being squandered and a late breakaway try by the Dragons both confirmed their victory and gave the final scoreline a more one-sided look than was actually the case in the game itself.'
RGC 1404 Under 18s next game is at home to the Ospreys on 25th September.'
