Head Coach Mark Jones watched his side win 47-12 against Caldy, in an entertaining game at Denbigh.
“It is always good to get back on the pitch and we made sure all the players in the matchday squad picked up some gametime. We showed some good energy and signs that our fitness work has made a difference at this stage of pre-season, plus running the tries. That said we also have plenty of work-ons this week in training especially at the breakdown and ball carrying so that sets the profile for our training leading up the Dragons game.
The other positives included the new faces getting a game under their belt Ilan Rowlands had some energy especially in the opening 30 minutes, Nick Butterworth also didn’t look out of place in an RGC shirt. Baily Rae will also benefit from todays game."
"Sam Jones return also feels like we have gained a new player with his return from injury, and he gets good hands on the ball, makes the runs and finishes and we saw glimpses of that today”
Both sides started brightly with plenty of ball in hand and direct running but it was RGC that got some points on the board with a try from Dion Jones. The conversion was struck by Billy McBryde.
Caldy answered back with a try in the corner minutes later, as the fast pace continued from both sides.
Tim Grey and Efan Jones combined to set up Billy McBryde and the fly-half did the rest to score the try. His boot extended the lead with the conversion.
The RGC set piece worked from the line-out when the ball was spun wide for winger Sam Jones to touch down. McBryde added the extras.
Caldy drove their pack over for another try, and the conversation made it a 21-12 game.
RGC began to find some space in the field and the points tally increased with an Efan Jones try and a Danny Cross conversion. The RGC pack then put the squeeze on at the scrum which resulted in a penalty try.
Cross and Dion Jones touchdown to make it a decent run out, before the Dragons await next week.
