Landmark news as RGC announce they will have women's team in the Regional Championships.
As one season comes to an end, the planning for next season has begun for Women’s rugby in RGC following the landmark news that RGC will have a senior women’s team participating in the regional championships for the first time next year. The programme will provide a platform for players to showcase their talents alongside the best players in the country and challenge for Wales honours whilst representing North Wales on a National stage..
WRU regional coordinator and Welsh Women’s international Rachel Taylor (pictured) had this to say. “The announcement of the creation of a RGC Womens side is a huge step forward for our region. The opportunity for North Wales based players to be able to represent there region will be a positive step forward and will ensure a visible pathway for them and show a progression for our current U18’s. It will allow them to be seen by national coaches and give them the best chance to play for Wales.
Recent North Wales club success with Caernarfon and Abergele shows that the talent and depth is here. With the growth of the game at club level across RGC at senior U18’s and U15’s, the creation of the senior team will have a number of clubs to pool from, but perhaps more importantly feedback in to. This will give us a real opportunity to upskill coaches and align ourselves with the National and regional coaching structure which will benefit all RGC teams, which will raise the standard in North Wales. With cluster rugby blooming and the current success of the Men’s RGC team now is a great opportunity for the Women in our region to be a part of the positive movement in RGC’s history.”
Women and girls gamechanger Dave Roberts said “I see this as a brilliant opportunity for our players to play representative rugby and push on for international honours. It also means that whatever rugby goals our young players have whether that be playing touch rugby in the summer or playing regional rugby with a view to being selected for Wales, they can access that here in North Wales. It is also a great chance for coaches and administrators to get the opportunity to work with international players and help further the status of women’s rugby in North Wales.”
