RGC 1404 19 v Ospreys W 17
RGC under 16’s welcomed a talented Ospreys W side to Parc Eirias on a sunny but breezy afternoon. Both sides contributed to an open and exciting game, and a conversion kick would ultimately separate them.
RGC started the stronger playing with the breeze, and began to dominate possession. Left wing Bailey Rae (Wrexham RFC) made several strong runs at the Ospreys defence, fed by full back Morgan Kirkham (Nant Conwy RFC), who came into the line at every opportunity. On 10 minutes, Rae crossed the line for the first try in the corner.
RGC enjoyed the lion’s share of possession now, but a strong Ospreys defence held firm. On 31 minutes however, loose-head prop Will Sanderson (Mold RFC), who was exceptional all day, drove 15 metres to touch down near the Ospreys posts. Kirkham converted, and RGC were in control of the game.
But having worked so hard in set piece, ruck and maul, RGC continually turned over good possession to their dangerous opponents, with a series of loose passes out of contact. Two minutes before the break, having dominated the half, another loose pass was intercepted by Ospreys’ outside half, Josh Thomas, who fed the strong running right wing Sean Collins, to score in the corner. Ospreys were back in the game at 12-5.
The second half started much the same, with Ospreys sensing a way back, with the breeze behind them. Rae had taken a knock and was replaced by Matthew Buchanan (Bethesda RFC). Within 4 minutes, Collins benefitted from more loose passing from the hosts, to run in under the posts. Thomas converted to make the scores level and it was now the Ospreys who looked the more dominant.
Liam Davies (Ruthin RFC) replaced Oscar Crowe (Llandudno RFC) and centre Jac Jones (Ruthin RFC) made way for Gethin Owen (Pwllheli RFC) who slid into outside half. Owen offered a different threat, with his quick tempo and fast feet, but it was his opposite number Thomas who benefitted from yet another interception to put the visitors ahead after 13 minutes.
Ben Thomas (Wrexham RFC) and Shaun Thomas (Bethesda RFC) came on to stiffen the pack, and on 23 minutes, ‘Gogs’ were level, with a cleverly worked try from Sam Rogers (Wrexham RFC). Kirkham slotted over a difficult conversion to put the hosts back in front 19-17. Jacob Quick (Ruthin RFC) came on to shore up the defence and RGC held on to the final whistle.
Coach Jason Roberts said “Again, I applaud the players’ character and determination to get the win, but we must improve our game management and ball retention skills. We worked so hard to dominate possession, only to give the ball away with high-risk passes”.
RGC next travel to Blues N on Sunday 6th September, kick off at 2.30pm.
