Wrexham put down a strong marker for automatic promotion to the 1st Division with a hard but thoroughly deserved victory here at Bryn Estyn Road to keep the pressure on Cobra at the top.
Dolgellau are now 16 points behind the leaders, in fourth place, with only three games in hand. The maths don’t add up anymore for the Meirionnydd side. However with the benefit of a stiff breeze it was Dolgellau who went ahead after only five minutes with centre, Henri Roberts slotting over a penalty from 25m out, for a high tackle, that’s saw Wrexham full back see yellow.
Dolgellau could not capitalise on a man advantage and it was the home side who began to grow into the match and after twenty five minutes, second row, Christian Burgoyne’s storming run saw stand-off Jacob Hughes break clear to score near the posts. He duly added the conversion to put his side 7-3 ahead. Dolgellau responded with a second penalty to Henri Roberts after half an hour as the Wrexham threequarters strayed off-side. 7-6 at the interval and all to play for.
Wrexham hit a purple patch at the beginning of the second half, scoring two quickfire tries in the opening six minutes. The first to prop Arron Hughes, to finish off a drving maul from 20 metres out. The second was a peach of a try. Wrexham stand-off Jacob Hughes’ perfect time pas saw centre Olly Dodd breach the Dolgellau line with a clean break at maximum speed to go over for their third try. This time Hughes converted to put Wrexham in a commanding position, leading 19-6. Dolgellau came close on one occasion, as full back, Rob Pugh was hauled down inches short.
Wrexham edged the set pieces, and kicked intelligently for the remainder of the match, but could not find the bonus point try they sought, as Dolgellau defended well. For Dolgellau, they kept going to the final whistle, but they know they have their work cut out to get things right for the ‘return’ match on the Marian this Thursday evening. KO 7.30pm
