Many thanks to Robin Elias for kindly supplying these excellent match reports.
A day to remember for many of the young players at Bangor Rugby Club over the bank holiday weekend where the finals of the Gogledd Cymru Youth Cup, Plate and Bowl competitions finals were held.
BETHESDA 46 v 7 NEWTOWN
The first match kicked off at mid day between Bethesda from down the road and Newtown who had to travel from mid Wales and it was not long before the local side took control. It was full back Dafydd Williams who touched down three times in the first period of play and together with outside half Ben Williams who converted one penalty and two conversions gave Bethesda a 22-0 half time lead.
Further tries were scored in the second half by flanker Sion Davies, Mathew Parry and winger Harri Phillips but Newtown managed a consolation try and conversion before the final whistle.
A hard fought but well deserved victory for Bethesda and their centre Wil Parry deserved the man of match award.
COBRA 30 v 28 DINBYCH
Jac Jones opened the scoring for Dinbych with a try after only two minutes of play and the reliable boot of Dafydd Pierce Evans added the extras to give them early advantage. It was not until the second quarter that Cian Roberts of Cobra was successful with a penalty kick from mid field for their first score and a try from Joss Davies soon followed and another from Deniol Jones along the wing and both were converted by Roberts to give Cobra a half time lead of 17-7.
Play continued as intense in the second half with Cobra adding to their total with two early penalties after Dinbych had opened with a Harri Roberts try converted by Evans. The score was increased in favour of Cobra 30-14 after thirty minutes with a Harry Hughes try and Roberts conversion but then there was a sudden change of emphasis and determination which produced two Rhys Johnson tries for Dinbych, both converted by Roberts, to bring the score to 30-28 with hardly any time left before the final whistle was blown.
An entertaining game and the man of the match was won by Harley Lloyd Jones of Dinbych.
PWLLHELI 19 v 18 NANT CONWY
This final encounter was between the fierceness of opponents and the match developed into an interesting battle with neither side willing to concede advantage.
Nant Conwy opened the scoring early in the match when Joss Williams slotted over two penalties and then he skipped through the Pwllheli defence for a touchdown and give his team a 11-0 advantage. The team from the Llyn Peninsula re-gathered and fought back and it was Ieuan Williams their outside half who broke the ranks of the Dyffryn Conwy side for a try some five minutes later. He also converted his own try. It was not long after that Brychan Dafydd broke free for Nant to score and with another successful conversion the score was extended to 18-7.
The second half was a similar affair until the last quarter when almost by majic Pwllheli took control of play and scored two magnificent tries, one from No 8 Elis Pari and a second for Ieuan Williams, one converted by Elgan Pugh, to give Pwllheli the lead 19-18 with two minutes of the match remaining. Despite their efforts, Nant were contained and the final whistle was blown.
An excellent hard tackling match full of skills and the man of the match was awarded to Iwan Emlyn Davies of Pwllheli.
