Clwb Rygbi Bro Gwernant 22 v 33 Mold 2nds
The eagerly anticipated start to the season has finally arrived, and Bro start their campaign off with a tough home fixture against promotion chasing Mold 2nds.
Both teams wanted a fast start to get a hold of the game, Mold looked to get the ball out wide as soon as they could, and this was how they scored their first and converted. Bro needed a response and on 25th minute, Ryan Edwards slotted over a penalty to bring the scores to 3-8. Bro continued to look to space down the middle, and eventually, Owen Parry started his run inside his own 22, ran passed a number of defenders, and drew in the full back to offload to Ciron Davies who ran over the white wash and the kick was converted.
This brought a response from Mold and they went on to score 2 quick tries to take the scores in at half time at 10 – 25.
irst 20 minutes of the 2nds half was the best period for Bro. Owen Parry, who was continuously breaking the tackles, got free and went in at the corner. Bro then turned to the Griffiths brothers from the bench due to injuries to both Matt Jones and Billy Davies , and this proved a good move as Ryan Griffiths broke through, and as the play went on, his brother Danny was able to battle over the line and score next to the posts. Kick converted, and the game was on, 22-25. Ryan unfortunately picked up a harsh yellow card to sit out for 10 minutes.
Mold kept the pressure building, and in the end scored in the corner which put the game out of reach for Bro. Bro has a couple more chances, with Iestyn Hughes running off the back of a scrum, but was stopped a few metres out which would of given Bro a loosing bonus point, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
“We knew this first game was going to by a tough game and it proved just that, but the lads stepped up and competed throughout the 80mintes. We gave a couple of soft tries away and we must learn from that. It was pleasing we had players to come off the bench to added intensity to our game that kept us right in it to the very end. Will have to assess the walking injured, as both Matt Jones, and Player/Coach - Gwyndaf Davies picked up knocks that may keep them out for a short while. It gives others now the chance to step up and claim their place in the team. We now look forward to travelling away to Flint this coming Saturday” Huw Evans – Team Manager
