It was 11-9 at the break, but in the 2nd period C`fon`s growing scrum dominance and good control at half back, allowed them to score 20 unanswered points and grab the bonus point win. It could have been different if Cefni had managed to convert their 1st quarter pressure into tries. A combination of tenacious Cofi defence and Cefni inaccuracy left them with only 3 Rhys Hughes penalties to show for their efforts early doors. Guto Pierce scored a try and kicked 2 penalties for the visitors.
The 2nd half was nearly all C`fon, as Cefni failed to get out of their half during the 3rd quarter. Cefni were under the pump, and it took intelligent covering by their 10, Gwilym Thomas to stop Iolo Hughes from getting to his kick ahead. Guto Pierce added his 3rd penalty for 14-9, and the pressure built on the home line. C`fon did not overplay their scrum dominance, but released quick front foot ball for their eager three quarters. After centre Devine was stopped under the posts, rapid recycling to the left gave Owen Williams a run in near the flag. Pierce`s kick made it 21-9 and the Cofis were on a roll.
Cefni narrowly failed to close the gap, when a long distance Rhys Hughes effort fell just short. When Pierce found grass in the Cefni half, Osian Hughes was forced to run from deep. He beat the 1st defender, but his offload near his 10 metre line found opposition hands. Two quick passes later, Iolo Hughes was sprinting over near the right flag, it was 26-9 and no way back for Cefni.
Cefni`s Andrew McMinimee made a 40 metre break up to the Cofi 22, but the lack of close support meant that the attack fizzled out. Later , Aaron Oliver made a strong 15 metre carry into the Cofi 22, but he was adjudged to have knocked on as he hit the deck. So no tries for Cefni, but a 4th for C`fon as they grabbed the bonus point at the death after another exciting period of interpassing. Veteran scrum half Gareth Patchet, grabbed the score: his experience and poise was crucial for a young Cofi squad. C`fon were heavily indebted to their props as well, especially Deio Terfel and Rhodri Jones.
For Cefni, it was good to see Declan Griffiths back in harness , after a long lay off due to major knee surgery. He was a consistent source of line out ball, and he showed glimpses of his abrasive ball carrying abilities.
When Cefni travel to Denbigh next week, they will hope that an early try will settle their nerves!!
