Another great report and pictures from Harry Guttridge.
Captain Dewi Pugh took a 25 man squad of Bala's finest athletes to Leigh rugby club for a friendly veterans game on Saturday 17th November.
The game was played in memory of Leigh Rugby Club legend Kevin McKenna, who sadly passed away a few weeks ago.
The referee mercifully played plenty of advantage, which allowed for a free flowing game and provided a great spectacle for the large crowd of spectators that had come to watch this memorial game. There was little to tell between the teams and any advantage that Bala had in the forwards was cancelled out by Leigh's quick backs. It was fitting that this good natured but hard fought game ended 17 all.
Highlights of the game included dominant scrummaging from front row legend 'Phil from Rhyl', Dewi Pugh's ruthless rucking (including one of his own players!), Ynyr Jones' precision kicking from hand, Jimmy Bridge's blistering line breaks, and Barry Greenwood's masterful orchestration of the Leigh back line.
Bala's man of the match 'Pete y Perf' put in a flawless performance at number 10. Despite a 31 year break since he last put on a shirt for Clwb Rygbi'r Bala, he didn't miss a kick all afternoon and demonstrated why he's probably the best fly half never to have played for Wales.
For a detailed write up of the match make sure you get a copy of the next issue of the weekly Bala paper, Y Cyfnod .
The only casualty of the afternoon was one of the senior club members that had over done the pre match hydration and succumbed to extreme fatigue in the Leigh club house.
Thanks to Leigh Rugby Club's hospitality a great evening was had by all.
The Britannia Inn will be reverberating to the chorus of 'Suspicious Minds' for a long time to come!
