Pwllheli returned to winning ways at Cae Dolawel and it was a hard fought match as usual againt Bro. The visitors were with a depleted squad for various reasons but it was Osian Parry Jones who came to the rescue with four well struck penalties out of five attempts.
The scoring opened on ten minutes of the first half when Parry Jones slotted over his first after a ruck infringement. On restart however Bro came back strongly and it took Tom James sixty seconds only to strike back and cross the whitewash out wide. The conversion attempt failed but home side continued in attacking mode for nearly all the remainder of the first half but the visitors stood firm and defended well. An offside in a maul gave an opportunity to increase the lead and Edwyn Roberts duly obliged with a sucessful penalty kick to give an 8 v 3 score at half time.
Pwllheli infringed again on restart and the resultant penalty kick from Roberts sailed between the posts. For the remainder of the second half, it was all the visitors attacking and Bro defending stoutly at the bottom of the field. Parry Jones was sucessful with three further penalties in the third quarter but despite all their efforts, Pwllheli were unable to breach the Bro defence and there was no further score.
The home side came close to stealing a win in the last few minutes of the game when awarded a penalty in a rare visit to their opponents' half but the attempt drifted wide to leave the score at 11 v 12 and a welcomed win
for Pwllheli.
With Llandudno loosing in Bala, Pwllheli are now a single point adrift of them in the league, having played the same number of games. The two contenders for the title will have to play each other twice before the end of the season and have games in hand over the third and fourth clubs in the league.
The Pwllheli Second team did well in Holyhead on Saturday, winning 17 v 5 with a young inexperienced side who scored two tries through Alan Roberts and Peryf ab Owain, Roberts converting both and was sucessful with a penalty attempt. They now have a good chance of winning Division Three North, having games in hand over the other two contenders.
With Wales playing England next Saturday, and no games scheduled, the next matches for Pwllheli are Llangefni for the first team and Flint for the seconds, both at home on Saturday 2nd March.
