This certainly was a game of very contrasting halves. The hosts were the sharper and hungrier in the 1st half, and deservedly led 18-7 at the break. However, the half time pep talk worked for the visitors, as they totally dominated territory and posession in the 2nd period. It was 18-14 with about 30 minutes to play: the fact that Bro did not concede any further points speaks volumes for their determination and willingness to put their bodies on the line.
Cefni had had their game postponed the previous Saturday, and they were certainly slow out of the blocks. It took an early Bro try to spur them into attacking mode. 5-0 down Cefni regathered the ball from the k.o. via a Dion Oliver interception. The forwards carried powerfully through several phrases, creating the space for winger Gethin Andrews to exploit out wide for a try converted by Rhys Hughes. 7-5 to Cefni.
There was alot of kicking at this stage: Rhys Hughes punted well for Cefni , but overall Bro edged most of the kicking battles due to their faster chase. Cefni were turned over a few times as they tried to run from deep, and Bro added a penalty 3 pointer, 8-7 to Bro. Then Bro caught Cefni napping from a line out 25 metres . The short throw to the front saw their hooker make ground ,and feed the support runners. The result was a 2nd Bro try out on the left flank: 13-7 . Cefni again responded quickly and came within a whisker of a 2nd try. The pack again set the platform for pivot Sior Grieves to launch his centre towards the posts. However , the ball was spilled within diving distance of the whitewash.
Bro then broke again into Cefni territory , and stretched the Cefni defence on the blind side several times. Although Cefni had the upper hand in most of the scrums, the Bro 9 managed to launch his backs on most occasions. His pace off the scrum gave Cefni problems, and when he threw a dummy as he broke from a scrum 25 metres out, a huge gap opened up and Bro scored their third try wide out on the right. It was a soft try to concede , and even worse right at the half time whistle.
After about 5 minutes of the 2nd half, Cefni took the game by the scruff of the neck as they proceeded to dominate through the pack. The Oliver brothers, Dion and Cai, made alot of metres on the charge, with the younger brother(Cai) probably winning the metres made stat on the day. After a period of double figure phase play, Dion Oliver bulldozed over for the try. Rhys Hughes again added the extras: 18-14 with about 30 minutes to play, and Cefni had all the momentum.
Cefni made several telling line breaks into the Bro 22, via centre Greg Horsman and pivot, Sior Grieves. However they were not converted into points, due to a combination of factors: a lack of close support runners and Bro`s excellent scramble defence. Cefni were also affected by some white line fever ,as they pounded the home line for long periods.
So a morale boosting win for Bro, but Cefni will surely need to ponder how their 2nd half dominance did not bring the win they craved.
