This league encounter provided the spectators with a feast of running rugby, resulting in eleven tries being scored. Whitland were caught cold at the off with three tries being conceded during the first ten minutes.
Prop Emma Williams drove and rolled with purpose, with the quick feed freeing Rachel Taylor to open the Cofi's account after two minutes. A similar build up of direct play by Brea Leung, Sophie Richards and Elen Evans then gave second row Tawny Travis the opportunity to pick up and charge over to double the lead.
As Whitland were beginning to claw their way back, a Rachel Taylor interception saw her set off from within her own half on a charge that led to her scoring her second of the day. Whitland were however by now sharing possession, with good work by Nick Walters, Amy Morgan and Jenny Hawkins testing the Cofi defence. It was however Rachel Taylor once again, who collected a spilt ball to break through and score her third with twenty five minutes played.
Minutes later there was undoubtedly the best try of the match when Caernarfon broke out of defence with precision passing and timing between Elen Evans and Beth Davies leading to the final deft slight of hand from Beth releasing no other than Rachel Taylor to score her fourth.
At this point everything appeared to be going Caernarfon's way and they soon extended their lead when another try line charge allowed scrum half Lowri Wyn to find a slim gap to ground among the melee.
Whitland kept plugging away with Emma Summons linking well and fullback Mari Griffiths shinning in the tackling department. Debutants Ffion Howells and Menna Thomas also fitted in admirably and would have benefited from the experience. Centre Marged Williams nearly got to the try line following a razor sharp break but the Cofi rearguard got back to intervene just in time.
On the stroke of half time dependant Cofi stand off Iona Evans broke free and found fullback Beth Davies at hand to sprint over. Another feat of the first forty minutes was the fact that Beth not only converted her own try but she also converted all of the previous six as well.
Numerous changes in personnel appeared in Caernarfon colours during the second half with centre pairing Greta Jâms and Molly Shuttleworth bonding well. The former's touchline run allowed debutant Jemma Stubbington to collect the offload and charge to the corner to cross the fifty point barrier. Rhian Pritchard who had not seen much ball out on the wing made a telling infield break and following Shuttleworth's intervention the final pass saw captain Brea Leung at hand to plough over. Mid way through the half hooker Non Roberts broke clear and got close, thus allowing flanker Elin Royle to collect and stretch over the line for the Cofis tenth try.
Whitland to their credit kept plugging away and succeeded to prevent the Cofis from adding to their total. Indeed they found a second wind and were able to maintain a longer presence in Caernarfon territory than previously. Their never say die attitude was finally rewarded following the intervention of rugby thinking Rebecca Norris who's timing of the pass put Whitland behind the Cofi defence and following a series of drives close to the line the ball was retained enough times to create the confusion required to allow Amy Morgan to crash over between the sticks. Norris duly added the conversion for a thoroughly deserved seven points.
Caernarfon have two other upcoming home fixtures against Pontyclun and Swansea, who themselves are due to face Whitland before their trip North.
