Following report kindly supplied by Caernarfon RFC.
Caernarfon dominated throughout proceedings during this Welsh Premier League encounter but the fact that less points were scored during the second period rightly suggests that Whitland were game till the end. They were also to be congratulated for being the first South Wales side to honour this Northern fixture this season despite travelling with a limited squad. Caernarfon gladly bolstered Whitland's ranks by offering individuals to ensure a meaningful fixture.
The Cofis soon ensured points on the scoreboard when ever improving centre Molly Shuttleworth broke free to score after three minutes. Her next decisive incision resulted in another try on the half hour mark however by then Jess Kavanagh had shown an array of talents to notch three groundings of her own. The first was a decisive break from deep followed by a classic example of what running in support can achieve with the third based on footballing skills and searing pace.
The half was brought to a close when another tireless worker in Cofi ranks, Brea Leung, collected the final pass and sustained her dash to the try line.
Whitland had remained committed throughout with the forwards tackling solidly. Cerys Moyle was a typical example of a constant gain line crossing forward with Megan Davies sharp and incisive at scrum half.#
Caernarfon however varied their play with a Iona Evans overhead cross field kick being pounced upon over the try line by Jess Kavanagh. Good interplay followed between Teleri Davies and Hannah Hughes with the former tacking the final pass to score what could be described as the best constructed try of the afternoon. Hughes was however soon to be rewarded for her efforts, as a determined run finally got her beyond the try line despite a valiant effort by the Whitland defence. In between the two scores mentioned Molly Shuttleworth had again showed her desire by outpacing the cover to score her hat rick of tries for the afternoon.
With the game entering its final phases amid deteriorating weather conditions a loud cheer was voiced when scrum half Katie Johanssen broke clear and fought off all chasers to score. The final whistle however was sounded following a break from her own half by Rhian Pritchard who also had the pace to ground successfully close to the uprights.
Eight of the thirteen tries were successfully converted by Molly Shuttleworth to give her a personal points tally of thirty one for the afternoon.
