Two great games saw Shotton and Teirw Nant progress to the semi-finals.
Pictures show Shotton's hooker Andrew Hearns and Teirw Nant's Llyr Jones being presented with their Conwy Land Rover Man of the Match Awards.
Centre stage went to the Conwy Land Rover North Wales Intermediate Cup quarters finals on a bitterly cold evening.
At Wrexham, the home side had the opportunity after five minutes to get the first points on the board but a penalty was pushed just wide. Shotton, pressurisiing, were awarded a penalty after ten minutes and Steve Elson converted to give the visitors a 0-3 lead.
The game was pretty even at this point with the forwards having a ‘battle royale’ but after twenty minutes, an infringement allowed Elson to double Shotton’s score and increase the lead to 0-6.
Warming to their task, Shotton’s backs looked dangerous every time they had the ball and, after half an hour, full back Darren Rees ended a flowing move with a touch down out wide and a lead of 0-11.
With half time imminent, Shotton got the killer score with the last move as their backs once again broke through the home defence, allowing winger Shaun Middleton to cross for a try, converted by Elson and an interval lead of 0-18.
Wrexham started the second half with gusto and, after a prolonged period of pressure, eventually got their first points with a well-worked try by Josh Francis, the conversion unfortunately going just wide.
This gave the home side hope for a comeback but the visitors were in no mood to let their hosts cross again and an arm wrestle in the middle of the field by the forwards ensued before a super break allowed centre John Ketland to put the game beyond Wrexham’s reach with a fabulous try, again converted by Steve Elson to give a final scoreline of 5-25.
Wrexham will be disappointed that they couldn’t get back in to the game after scoring their first points and Shotton will head back up the A55 pleased with their competent display and looking forward to the semi-finals. The Conwy Land Rover Man of the Match went to Shotton’s livewire hooker Andrew Hearns.
In the other quarter final played tonight, it was a battle of the 2nd teams as Teirw Nant hosted Pwllheli 2nds.
The home side opened the scoring with a try by Barry Wanklyn, shortly followed by a Gwion Jones penalty to lead 8-0.
Pwllheli came back with a try by Owain Thomas to reduced the deficit to one point at 8-7. Nant responded with a try two minutes after this score with a Caradog Hughes try to make it 13-7. With half time approaching a try by Llyr Jones, converted by Gwion Jones, gave an interval score of 20-7 to Teirw Nant.
Nant opened the second half with an early score, a try by Grant Jones, extending their lead to 25-7. Pwllheli were not prepared to throw in the towel and they were next on the scoreboard with a try by Ifan Roberts, converted by Alan Roberts to reduce the deficit to 25-14.
Nant put the game to bed four minutes later when Gwion Jones crossed for a try which rounded off the night’s scoring and gave a final score of 30-14 to Nant.
The Conwy Land Rover Man of the Match Award went to Nant scrum half Llyr Jones.
