Dolgellau through to semi final after memorable victory over local rivals Bala. Ruthin away in semi-final.
Dolgellau are through to the semi-finals of the North Wales Senior Cup following this magnificent victory over fierce local rivals, Bala, on a wet and blustery floodlight match on the Marian. Their reward is a plumb semi-final tie at Ruthin.
Bala arrived with high hopes of inflicting a second home defeat on Dolgellau following a narrow one point victory in the league earlier in the season, but it was Dolgellau who rose to the occasion and ran out richly deserved winners.
It was Bala who took the lead after 3 minutes on the clock with a penalty to Full-back Rhydian Jones. Dolgellau were level almost immediately when skipper, Gerwyn Thomas slotted over a penalty. He put Dolgellau ahead on the half hour mark with his second penalty and five minutes later it was 9-3 with his successful 3rd penalty. The half ending with the match delicately placed.
Bala had the advantage of the elements behind them during the second half and full-back Jones made the score 9-6 after only five minutes after Dolgellau had infringed at a ruck.
The next 10 minutes saw Dolgellau hit a purple patch where they scored two tries from their hard working forwards. The first came to hooker Geraint Evans went over in the left hand corner following a surging forward drive. The second came 10 minutes later when prop Huw Emyr Jones found second row Rhys Roberts to barge over for a richly deserved try, following a very similar forward drive, into the same corner, and take 19-6.
Bala came back strongly, as they had to, in a tense final quarter and a nail biting last 10minutes was assured as Full-back Jones put over two penalties to bring the visitors to within a converted try of Dolgellau at 19-12.
However there was no denying Dolgellau their victory and they held on to the lead with some terrific defending on their own try line to seal a memorable win.
