The Plate and Bowl comps go 'national' for Round 2 (Plate) and Round 3 (Bowl) and there are some great games in store for this Saturday.
In the Plate, the draw has been unkind with four of our six clubs making the journey down South to face very stiff opposition. The remaining two clubs , Llangefni and Rhuthun have been drawn against each other! so we are guaranteed to have one of our teams in the hat for Round three, These two sides met last week at Cae Smyrna with Cefni edging the league encounter 19-15, it promises to be another great battle so make your way to Llangefni on Saturday.
Dolgellau travel down to Div 1 East Central Ystrad Rhondda who have an impressive P6 W5 L1 record in the league so far this season. Long established club founded in 1884, notable players include prop Mike Griffiths 38 caps, Lion 1989. They won this comp in season 2014/15. On the face of it a tough draw for Dol's youngsters but they will relish the challenge.
Current Div 1 North champions Pwllheli travel down the A470 hoping to strike gold at Klondyke the home of Merthyr side Dowlais. The home side who were promoted last season ply their trade in a very competitive Div 1 East, record P6 W1 L5 so far this season. Its never easy 'down south' but the unbeaten Llyn boys are going well and will fancy their chances.
In form Llandudno travel down to 'The Fera' Div 1 West Central side Ystalyfera. Fera are going well this season P6 W5 L1 and are 3rd in the table. They have pedigree in this comp -they lost the final last year to Penallta -on a try count. Wales legend Clive Rowlands is a former player. Tudno who may be the underdogs but on their day have sufficient firepower to go into the hat for the next round.
League leaders Nant visit Div 3 South West Aberavon Quins. Whilst the Quins have not had the best of starts to their season P6 W2 L4 and are 3rd from bottom in their league they have a great tradition and Nant can expect a tough encounter. Hogia Nant will be keen to progress in this comp in which they came so near to a final place last season.
In the 3rd Round of the WRU Bowl I start with a clash between unbeaten Div 3 leaders Teirw Nant who visit in form Div 2 Wrexham. This match has all the ingredients of being a 'cup' classic between two committed sides.
Second place Shotton Steel who are unbeaten so far this season welcome Swansea village side Glais who play in Div 3 West Central A. P6 W2 L3 D1. On form and with home advantage Shotton could ease themselves to Round 4.
Rhyl travel down to face the students of Cardiff University. The students are enjoying a good season unbeaten and top of the BUS South A league and are/were the current Welsh Universities champions - they were subsequently stripped of the title 'in mysterious circumstances'. Like any tie against 'students' you will have to have your skates on -promises to be an interesting encounter.
COBRA welcome Crymych 2nds to Meifod after disposing of fellow Mid Walians Llanidloes in the last round. The visitors play in in the WRU Conference and are going well P6 W4 L2 and had a great 10-5 win at Cardigan who were last year's semi finalist in the last round. A certain John Davies has made an appearance for the visitors during the season. COBRA will have to be at their best to progress.
Newtown host Newport Gwent club Whiteheads who play in Div 3 East C. The visitors are going well P6 W5 L1, top their league scoring an average of over 30 points per game. They are an ex steelworks side based in Bassaleg and boast Welsh rugby legends former steel men Bobby Windsor and Charlie Faulkner as former players. Town will have their work cut out.
i wish all our teams every success on Saturday.
