Full league programme this Saturday as things hot up in the title and relegation stakes.
Only a couple of early kick off league games last week squeezed in before the French match at Cardiff. Pesda and Bro had good wins gaining valuable points in the relegation dogfight. We witnessed a magnificent contest at Bodegroes in the semi final of the Conwy Land Rover North Wales Cup when Pwllheli pipped Nant 21-20 at the death to go through to final again this year. Honours are now even between these fine sides with one victory each --guess what ? they meet again on Saturday in a crucial league encounter --there will be a large crowd at Pant Carw -get there early.
Elsewhere Bala booked their place in the final again this year after defeating Llangefni 37-26 in mid week. Caernarfon beat Bro at Bangor to reach the Plate final when they will face either Llandudno or Rhuthun who are scheduled to play their semi on 31st March.
CR Dinbych are through to the Intermediate Cup final after a hard fought 24-13 mid week victory at home to Teirw Nant at Caeau Les Philips. They will play fellow Div 2 club Shotton in the final.
Newtown beat Abergele at Pentre Mawr to go to the final of the Intermediate Plate when they will meet either Bangor or Llangollen who meet on 31st March.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Div 1 10th place Bro (P16 W5 L11) visit their neighbours 3rd place Bala (P16 W12 L4). This is their first league meeting this season as the reverse fixture was postponed. Bro had a welcomed victory last week against lowly Colwyn Bay but are still in the relegation mire.Bala showed good form in their Cup win at Llangefni and will look to bag the points and deny Bro their second away win of the season.
Llandudno (P15 W11 L4) travel to Cae Ddafydd to take on a resurgent Bethesda (P18 W7 L11) who have won 3 on the trot to haul themselves to 8th position. They will have to work very hard to maintain their winning sequence against the in form visitors - who are unbeaten in their last seven league games. Both teams are going well , difficult to predict but a fully loaded Llandudno may prove too strong in a tight game.
Something will have to give at The Morfa when the Cofis (P15 W4 L11) entertain Rhuthun (P18 W8 L10). The hosts have only managed a home win once this season whilst the visitors have only one win under their belt on the road. Rhuthun won the corresponding fixture 31-0 at Cae Ddol but the Cofis had a good mid week win against Bro to reach the final of the Intermediate Cup. Rhuthun also had a win against the same opposition last time out. The Cofis need the points to steer clear of the relegation basement and they may have just enough to take the spoils.
Bottom club Colwyn Bay heavily beaten at Bro last week face another tough assignment again this Saturday when they travel to fellow strugglers Dolgellau. It was a close 22-17 victory for the hosts at Brookfield Road earlier in the season and I take them to bag the points on offer to assist their relegation survival efforts.
Llangefni (P15 W10 L5) who are in 5th place make the journey to 7th place Mold (P17 W7 L10). The home side are not enjoying the best of results having suffered four successive defeats whilst the visitors are going well despite losing 37-26 to Bala midweek in the Conwy Land Rover NW Cup semi final. The sides have not met this season in the league, Mold as always will be a tough nut to crack but on form the Cefni boys could have the edge.
Match of the day is the clash at Pant Carw between league leaders Nant and current champions Pwllheli. The home side are currently 6 points clear with the visitors having a game in hand. Honours are even this season with a victory each--both matches have been very close -2 points aggregate difference in the two games. We were treated to a 'battle royale' last week at Bodegroes and there is eager anticipation in both camps for this match. The Llyn outfit just about edged the forward battle last week and the Nant boys looked very sharp and dangerous in attack. There is a lot at stake in the quest for the league title for both sides, it could go either way, it will be a great battle between two very good sides. Close call- Pwllheli by a head.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Div 2 runaway leaders CR Dinbych on the back of a hard fought mid week 24-13 home win against Teirw Nant to reach the final of the Conwy Land Rover Intermediate Cup host Llanidloes who are unbeaten in their last three outings.
In Div 3, Two great games -Holyhead (2nd) welcome Pwllheli 2nds (3rd) and leaders Teirw Nant can clinch the title and promotion if they beat visitors CR Dinbych 2nds.(game postponed after going to press)
