We were treated to some great games last week with the welcome reports of sizeable crowds enjoying the action.
Round Up.
In Div1 my 'team of the week' Colwyn Bay broke their duck in style with a bonus point win at Brookfield Road against Bro. Bethesda now occupy the bottom position following their home defeat against high flying Nant. Second from bottom Dolgellau narrowly lost out on a losing bonus point in a close encounter at Rhuthun. Meanwhile Mold came away from Caernarfon with the points to move into 4th place behind Bala who were victorious at Llandudno. League leaders Pwllheli were made to work hard for their bonus point win against a highly competitive Llangefni side.
In Div 2 Dinbych retain pole position following a big win at Bangor Third place COBRA went down at a rejuvenated Wrexham. Welshpool took Rhyl close gaining a losing bonus point in their 19-13 defeat. Both Newtown and Llanidloes had emphatic wins against Abergele and Llangollen.
In Div 3 Menai Bridge pulled out all the stops to beat leaders Pwllheli 2nds 13-12. Holyhead crushed Mold 2nds 64-15 and Mach beat Flint 19-8 in a close match.Rhos recorded their first win of the season beating Benllech 24-12.
Div 1 Predictions
Last week thanks to Bala and Colwyn Bay my success rate was a meagre 66% . As we now move to Week 7 life for your pundit does not get any easier as I strive to get 100%-here goes my predictions which hopefully this week will wipe the smile from my bookmaker's face !!
First up is third place Bala's (W5 L1) home encounter with Colwyn Bay (W1 L5). The Maes Gwyniad outfit fresh from their away victory at Llandudno cannot underestimate their visitors who had a comprehensive 30-17 home win against Bro last time out. Bala won 100-7 last season and form suggests a home win.
Bro (W2 L4) face a difficult challenge when they entertain unbeaten league leaders Pwllheli. They will be keen to put their disappointing performance in their last week's defeat at Colwyn Bay behind them but it will be a tough ask against the current champions who are in good form. They lost 63-0 in corresponding match last season -closer this time but away win on my card.
Its a battle of the basement at The Marian when Dolgellau (W1 L5) host Bethesda (W0 L6). In their last league encounter Dol won 32-3. With fellow strugglers Colwyn Bay getting a bonus point win last week there is added pressure on both sides in this match. It will be a hard slog up front -Marian is never an easy place to go and I go for a home win.
Sixth place Llangefni (W3 L3) take on 5th place Rhuthun (W4 L2) at Cae Smyrna. Cefni gave a good account of themselves losing at Pwllheli last time out whilst Rhuthun beat Dolgellau at home in a close game. Close game in prospect , Cefni won 33-19 in league match 2015/16 season, it will be tight again but on balance a home win is n the cards. These teams meet again at Llangefni the following week 28th October in the second round of the WRU Plate.
My match of the day is the visit of Llandudno (W3 L3) to Mold (W4 L2) . The home side are on a three wins on the trot in the league and will be keen to avenge their WRU Plate defeat at Llandudno earlier in the month. Mold won 22-9 in corresponding match last season and I feel home advantage will swing the balance in their favour.
Nant in second place (W5 L1) welcome Caernarfon (W2 L4) to Pant Carw. The Cofis are on a three match losing streak dropping to 8th position. Nant are going well and won 26-8 last time. The Cofis could rise to the challenge against their old rivals but on form Nant will be the winners.
In summary therefore I go for HOME wins in Bala v Bay, Dolgellau v Pesda, Llangefni v Rhuthun, Mold v Tudno, Nant v Cofis, AWAY win Bro v Pwllheli.
Div 2 and 3
In Div 2 Match of the day will be at Llanidloes when the undefeated home side take on another undefeated side Shotton Steel- a cracker in prospect.
In Div 3 Pwll 2nds will be keen to get back on tack after losing their unbeaten record when they make the journey to Mold 2nds. Teirw Nant will put their unbeaten run on the line when they visit Flint.
