A mixture of WRU Plate and Bowl and league matches to look forward to on Saturday.
There were some great games across the board last week with Pwllheli conceding late in their defeat at Maesteg Celtic in the WRU Plate. In Div 1 results went as expected (100%) but according to my bookie I am due for an "adjustment" as he calls it-this week perhaps?
In Div 2 yet another big win by leaders Dinbych, wins also by the chasing trio of Wrexham, Shotton and COBRA.
In Div 3 a real ding dong battle at Holyhead who edged out Menai Bridge 12-7 to retain their top spot. Teirw Nant are hard on their heels following a big home win against Mold 2nds.
This week we have our remaining four clubs in the WRU Plate and Bowl comps, they face very tough competition to keep alive their hopes of going to the last eight and ultimately an appearance in the coveted Finals Day at the Principality.
In Round 4 of the Plate league leaders Nant travel down to Gwent to take on Div 1 East side Blaenavon who have an array of past former internationals like Ken Jones, Terry Cobner, John Perkins and Mark Taylor amongst their former players. The hosts are not having the best of seasons with a P11 W2 L9 record which sees them second from bottom in what is a tough league. Nant will have to be at their best if they wish to retain the chance to emulate their 2012 exploits when they reached the final.
Still in the Plate fellow Div 1 club Rhuthun make the journey to Div 1 East Central league leaders Ystrad Rhondda who have an impressive P13 W11 L2 record won the Plate in 2014/15. The Cae Ddol boys who incidentally if my memory serves me right play in similar colours could start as underdogs. They will need to fire on all cylinders to overcome their opponents.
In Round 5 of the WRU Bowl COBRA entertain Div 3West A club Pembroke at Meifod. The visitors top their league with a P9 W8 L1 card and have scored in excess of 80 league tries so far this session. COBRA are also going well but will have to be on top of their game to overcome their free scoring opponents.
Wrexham enjoying a good season welcome Div 3 East B unbeaten league leaders Caephilly side DERI (P9 W9) The Bryn Estyn outfit are in second place in Div 2 with a P10 W7 L3 will have a real battle on their hands to go to the hat for the quarters.
As you can see there are no easy games at this stage but rest assured that our North and Mid Wales flag bearers will give their all to proceed to the next stage of the comps. Pob dymuniad da i bob un ohonoch.
In Div 1 at the time of going into press I understand that the scheduled match at Bro who were to entertain Caernarfon has been postponed due to a bereavement.
Elsewhere in Div 1 current champions Pwllheli who are in 3rd place welcome bottom club Colwyn Bay. Pwll won 69-5 earlier in the season and form strongly suggests that they will take the spoils on Saturday.
Great match in prospect at Cae Smyrna when Llangefni (4th) host 7th place Llandudno with 6 points separating them. The visitors won 31-20 at Maesdu Road. Both teams are currently enjoying winning runs and it could be close. Cefni's form shades the odds slightly in their favour.
Mold smarting from last week's heavy loss at leaders Nant host second from bottom Dolgellau who lost at home to Llangefni last time out. Dol despite spirited displays which have seen them gain 4 losing bonus points are badly in need of a W. Mold turned them over 32-20 at the Marian and on form should again bag the points.
Second place Bala will extend the usual warm welcome to Bethesda at Maes Gwyniad. They both come into the match on the back of hard fought wins. Bala won 28-7 at Dol Ddafydd earlier in the season and whilst it will be a hard forward battle Bala are well placed to complete the double.
Hywel.
