Enthralling match at Llanidloes as Boys Clubs of Wales hang on to take the spoils
North Wales Under 16s narrowly failed to beat their Boys Clubs of Wales counterparts in a hugely enthralling and competitive game in which the result was in doubt right up until the final whistle. From the outset it was clear that the two sides were closely matched with the contact area being keenly contested and scoring chances being very much at a premium. It was no surprise therefore when the opening points of the game came via a Penalty rather than a try,and it was the visitors who opened the scoring. They were to stretch this lead to 8 points when with possibly the only clean break of the game, their right wing side-stepped past 3 defenders to score close to the posts. North Wales immediately came back with a 3-pointer of their own via the boot of Osian Jones ( Pwllheli) to reduce the leaders half-time advantage to 5 points.
If anything the second half was even more keenly contested than the first with both sides throwing the proverbial kitchen-sink at each other but with defences very much on top neither side looked likely to score. Than is until the final 10 minutes of the game when first, man of the match, Alex Pope was denied a try when the referee ruled he had been held up over the line and then number 8 Max Davies was penalised for a double movement as he crossed the whitewash. The game finished with the North Wales side camped on the Boys Club try-line and it was with some relief that the latter were able to clear the ball into touch to bring about the referees final whistle.
Although obviously disappointed to lose, the North Wales side can take great heart from a totally committed performance which bodes well for the future.
