North Wales Cup semi-final match report
Following report kindly supplied by Llandudno RFC.
In a match at Maesdu Road, which was badly effected by Wet and Windy conditions,Llan Youth came out on top, to secure there place in the final against local rivals Nant Conwy.
Caernarfon put the home side under early pressure from the kick off, keeping play inside of the home side half, however Llan settled down and began to take play into the visitors half, and after about fifteen minutes of play, breached their try line with a try by Ryan Pike, which he also converted.
This first half was one of a fairly evenly contested match, with the visitors gaining three points from a converted penalty by Guto Pearce.
Such was the weather conditions, that Llan changed their tactics in the second half, using their pack of forwards to take play over the gain line, and were rewarded from a driving maul over the try line, with Sam Hughes getting the touch down.
Caernarfon came back strongly for a period with Guto Pearce scoring a try, and two more points with the conversion which kept them in touch with the home side score.
However the final quarter of play belonged to the home side, with quick ball being delivered by the forwards that they sealed this semi final win, against a side in a league above with tries by Dan Colclough and Ryan Pike, with the latter converting both.
They now meet Nant Conwy in the final, on a date to be arranged by the North Wales Rugby Union Council some time in May.

Bala 2nds 10 v Nant Conwy 2nds 19
Following match report kindly supplied by Bala RFC.
Bala second team narrowly lost 10-19 to league leaders Nant Conwy in a fiercely contested game at Maes Gwyniad on Thursday 30th April.
The build up to this match couldn’t get much bigger, being a ‘double header’ league and Gwynedd Cup semi final between two sworn enemies. Bala were desperate for the league points, in search of some much needed silverware and, more importantly, after their first win of the season against their old rivals. There were no shortage of volunteers for this match and Bala fielded their strongest side of the season.
The game plan was to scrummage Nant off the park and deny their quick backs any possession. Bala started with their heaviest pack of the season and crash ball specialists, Iolo Defaidy and Iolo Prys, in the centres to batter Nant into submission. There was also plenty of depth ready to come off the bench.
The game started at a frightening pace, with both teams battling it out in the middle of the pitch and neither team prepared to take a backwards step. Nant gradually began to gain the ascendancy in open play with their quick offloads and fast recycling. This generated the space for their lightening quick winger to weave through the Bala defence and score under the posts after 20 minutes of play. Nant continued to put Bala under pressure and, despite some last ditched defending from full back Rhun Dafydd and winger John Emrys, were rewarded with another try under the posts 15 minutes later.
Bala fought back hard in the remaining minutes of the first half, knowing that a try before half time would put them right back in contention. Nant repelled powerful drives from second row Robin Cablyd, back row Dafydd Drewgoed and the Fedw Lwyd brothers and Bala only managed to come away with a penalty from the boot of Huw John. The score at the interval was 3-14 to Nant
Replacement centre, Steffan Morris, was foaming at the mouth when he came onto the pitch and rampaged like a wild bull deep into the Nant half. Bala laid siege to the Nant try line for the next fifteen minutes but just could’t find a way through the their well organised defence. Gethin Fedw Lwyd even managed to cross the whitewash but a Nant hand slid under the ball to hold it up! Nant eventually stole the ball to score a further try with minutes remaining on the clock and bring to an end Bala’s hopes of an upset.
Although Nant now had an unassailable lead, Bala refused to give up and bravely threw everything at them. John Emrys turned the ball over with another bone crunching tackle in his own half and Bala’s big forwards carried the ball to within metres of the Nant try line. The Nant scrum just couldn’t handle the power from the front row duo of Lee Evans and Mei Pen Swej and, after repeatedly boring in, Nant conceded a penalty try in the last play of the game to bring the final score to 10-19.
The Bala lads can be proud of their performance and they showed real heart by battling right to the end. This match demonstrated that there is little between Bala and league leaders Nant Conwy.
Despite losing the first six league games of the season, Bala managed to turn things around to finish a respectable fourth place in the league. The challenge now for Bala is to keep the momentum going into next season. A big thank you to everyone that has supported us through the season.
