A nailbiting win for RGC Women but what a fantastic advert for women's rugby.
RGC Women 13 v Scarlets Women 12
What a game! RGC were under the cosh for the first twenty minutes, defending well but having very little of the ball. Gradually they started to inch upfield and start to pose the visitors problems, especially in the set piece.
Hammering away at the Scarlets line but just falling short, it was the visitors who cleared their lines and broke upfield with some tremendous handling, moving the ball along the backs, to touch down in the corner and score the game's first points.
Disappointment for RGC but they regained the initiative and were rewarded when Nicky Crawford powered over to bring the scores level on the stroke of half time. 5-5 and all to play for in the second half.
The Scarlets were out of their blocks early in the second period and crossed for a cracking try, well converted to lead 5-12.
For the next ten minutes, RGC enjoyed most of the territory and possession but were finding it hard to get through a solid Scarlets defence.
However, twelve minutes in to the half, Nicky Crawford got her second try which was greeted with an enormous roar by the noisy home supporters. 10-12 and game on.
It was nip and tuck as both teams went for that all-important next score and just in to the last ten minutes of the game, RGC were awarded a penalty, coolly converted to edge 13-12 ahead.
The Scarlets bounced back and were making it a very nervy ending to the game for the home side and their supporters and, when Scarlets were awarded a penalty in what was likely to be the last kick of the game, most in the ground had their eyes closed as the ball sailed just wide, RGC gathered and cleared in to the arms of the ecstatic crowd.
Well done to both sides for a superb game of rugby and best of luck in the next round.
