Defending champions opened up their campaign with a comfortable nine try rout of Llandudno which initially would have sent shock waves around the North Wales circuit. But as the full details of the result filtered through the result could hardly be considered as a shock or surprise as the visitors were up against it before the first whistle had been blown. Arriving at the Morfa with only fourteen players and having to start the game with uncontested scrums can hardly have been on anyone’s mind in the run up to the game. To make matters worse the weather conditions were atrocious with driving rain and a slippery surface to contend with.
Despite turning up without a full squad, the fourteen that Llandudno took the field can take pride in their efforts and keeping the score to below sixty can be considered an achievement. As for Caernarfon’s performance, little can really be learned, as the unbalance truly played its part along with the autumnal conditions. By the break the bonus point was already in the bag with four tries and two conversions for a straightforward 24-0 lead. First to cross was backrow Gareth Thirsk who was on hand to support Captain Rhys Evans who picked up at the base of an attacking scrum. It was the Captain, Evans’s, turn to double the score with twenty minutes on the clock when this time he was able to dart over following another pick up from the base of the scrum. Kelvin Morris stepped up and added the two points. Minutes later the scoreboard was on the move again as the backs started to make use of the overlap with Bari Jones latching on to the try making pass to cross over for the score. Morris added the extras for the 19-0 lead. The crucial bonus point try can just after the half hour when a patient attack out of defence saw the ball worked well across the backline for Dylan Gwyn to dash over for the try.
The second half saw the try fest continue with Centre Dafydd Roberts crossing following a poor kick out of defence from the visitors. Dylan Gwyn started the counterattack linking well with Bari Jones before releasing Roberts to power over for the score, with Morris adding the extra two points. The points kept coming when second row Paul Williams was loitering out wide on the right and his patience paid off when the backs swept the ball out wide for Williams to canter in for the try.
Morris added the extras to extend the lead to 38-0. Next to get on the score sheet was scrumhalf, Trystan Gwilym, who did an excellent break from the base of a ruck, to dance over for an excellent try. Morris now in full swing slotted over another conversion. The scoring didn’t stop as Gareth Thirsk crossed for his second as tired legs were now prevalent following a busy afternoon of defending, and again the reliable Morris added the extras. The final try came when debutant wing, Carnedd Williams crossed for Caernarfon’s ninth try with Morris stepping up to slot over the conversion for a personal tally of fourteen points. Off to a winning start but little learnt from the experience.
Caernarfon head off to Pwllheli this Saturday who will obviously in a buoyant mood following their victory against Bethesda.

Bala 20 v Ruthin 17
Ruthin played their first match of the season at Newly promoted Bala in the pouring rain on Saturday and after a hard fought contest lost narrowly and came away with a losers bonus point. Both sides started urgently and within 10 minutes Bala went ahead with a penalty goal which was immediately responded to by a Blues penalty goal kicked by full back Shay Tudor. Bala’s strong pack had the ascendancy in the scrum and after a period of pressure on the visitors line went over for a pushover try which was unconverted. The home team were conceding kickable penalties under pressure as the Blues counterattacked and Tudor was successful with two more putting Ruthin a point ahead 9-8 at half time. After the break the home side mounted a concerted attack on Ruthin’s line with The Blues scrum repeatedly being pushed back.
Eventually with Ruthin down to 14 men after a yellow card the pressure paid off and the home side pushed over for their second try also unconverted. Immediately after the restart winger Kyle Davies collected the ball and scythed through the home side to defence to offload to hooker John Gill to go over a try putting the Blues one point back in the lead. Shortly afterwards Tudor kicked his fourth penalty goal widening the points difference to four points in favour of the visitors. The home side had not finished and after a series of scrums on the Blues line which the visitors defended with increasing desperation they went over for their third try well into injury time which they converted giving them a hard fought 20-17 win.
