First fixtures of the season are always nervous affairs but, when 8 of your players are having their first ever game, nails get bitten! The game opened somewhat scrappily but soon settled down to a really competitive contest with Colwyn Bay applying most of the early pressure. However, Welshpool’s dogged defence held the Bay until a break from the home side, two rucks later the ball found Fiona Moss on the halfway line, she evaded a couple of tackles and showed a clean pair of heels to score an unconverted try.
The next twenty minutes saw each side threatening in its turn but some very big hits from both defences kept the scoreboard idle. Finally, Cat Davies proved too strong to bring down and, breaking several tackles, fought her way to score in the corner shortly before half time.
Colwyn Bay had not come to lie down. The game resumed with them providing most of the pressure again. A penalty ten metres from the line was just held out but continued pressure saw them get their just rewards shortly after. The next 20 minutes looked as if it might become a battle of the forwards as both sides started to tire and attack after attack was cut short. The stalemate was broken when Colwyn Bay found some space on the right and a mismatch of forwards defending against backs. With the game now even, both sides threw everything at getting the win. It seemed to have come when Fiona Moss broke from inside her own 22 and ran the length of the pitch only to be hauled all the way back for a scrum.
Honours even – and rightfully so. This game was notable for the size of the crowd watching, I expect there will be even more for the next fixture. The Ladies did good.

Excellent start to the 15s season by Bay Ladies
Today (Sunday 28th september) saw the Bay ladies get their 15s season underway.
Last season saw some commitment issues which meant the Ladies struggled to play some 15s fixtures, I'm glad to say this season hasn't encountered the same problem.
On arriving at Welshpool RFC the coaching team were delighted to see 17 Players arrive for this mid wales fixture. The sun was shining and the pitch was in great condition, all the ingredients for a great game of rugby were in place and the Ladies didn't dissapoint.
Bay won the toss and decided to play with the wind and the sun behind them but to our dissapointment we didn't use this to our advantage and after some big runs from the huge welshpool pack it was first score to welshpool. The Bay Girls regrouped and after the restart got into the game with some great tackling in the middle of the park. It was at this point that we were starting to hit our stride but again hard work by the welshpool forwards saw the home team get on the score sheet again.
The ladies were now 10 - 0 down and then all of a sudden it clicked. Some great work by our own forwards and the backs remaining in good shape and breaking the gain line kept most of the second half in welshpools 22 and then finally the breakthrough a great team effort and a first try for the bay, 10 - 5 and game on. Much of the same was to follow some great pressure and commited tackles forcing welshpool to make some mistakes, and with mistakes came the second bay try 10 - 10 game on!
As we moved into the final quarter of the game it was tug of war, mistakes from both sides saw it open up with welshpool initially looking the more likely, it was then when the Bay's new full back made a try saving tackle and switched momentum back in the Bays favour. In the dying minutes the girls gave it their all but unfortunately couldn't make the break through.
All in all a great competitive 80 minutes played. With new girls on both teams gaining valuable experience and we look forward to a return fixture.
Well played Welshpool Ladies and Great stuff Bay Ladies
